"On the early a.n'i. of Wednes- day, August 10, 1949. two strang- an registered at a hotel in Sum- merside and after being shown to their room. remained there un- til some time after lunch. They came down to the desk, asked the amount of their account and pass- ed over a cheque in favour of Mr. R. C. Thomas itnd signed R. C. ‘rhesus. is the amount of 81100. The dififle of their account and the amount of the cheque was paid in cash to the strangers and they left the hotel. intimating they were leaving for the main- land. The hotel manage being auspicious. immediately called the bank at Charlottetown and discov- ered that R, C. Thomas had no account there. with the result that the hotel manager notified the Summsrside Town Police. who in i.urn called the R. C. M. P. de- tachment at Bordon. resulting in the arrest of one George Douglas and a. man posing as Robert. C. Thomas. hack to Surnmerside and handed

ttetown detachment area had ‘seen burglarized. -In one. the cash register. which contained a number of coppers, was taken and in another a radio was stolen. On searching the car in which the prisoners were travelling. the ato- len radio was found in the trunk. as well as another radio. which had been stolen in a break in New Brunswick. The car was later identified as having been stolen from Moncton. New Brunswick, on Sunday. August 7, 1949,

The make of the car was unknown. but it Was definitely known to have been displaying a Quebec license plate. On checking with the Quebec Pro- vincial Police, it was ascertained that a i947 Hudson sedan had been stolen from Riviera du Loup. on the second of August. "On the night of September 16. 1949. the Dry Goods Store of Henderson 8: Cuclmore's of Char- lottetown was burglarized and a considerable quantity of clothing and haberdashery stolen. The Charlottetown City Police‘ request; ed the assistance of our labora- tory facllities and a. check was made on the store premises for fingerprints and clues. Entry into the store was made by breaking a window and a besverboard p tition at the rear. In leaving. t e burglars, pushed the clothes to one side on a large rack and held on to the nickel bar of the rack in getting out. Several latent finger- print impressions were developed thereon.

"’I‘hd’ investigation was continued by the, Charlottetown City Police. On October 4. 1949, a circular was received from R. C. M. P.. Hali- fax. lndicated that the two above named individuals had been ar- rested at Lunenburg and that they had in their possession at the time. a considerable quantity of clothing, habcrdashery and miscel- laneous articles, which would in- dictate that they had burgiarlzed several business a blishments. The list was compared with the one concerning the Charlottetown break and numerous articles were identified as having been taken from Henderson & Cudrnore‘s..

"On questioning Strickland at the St, Patrick's Buy!‘ Home at Halifax. he denied breaking into Henderson & Cudmorc'a but when Lee was interviewed at the Nova Scoiia School for boys. he admit- ted that he had taken part in this break and numerous others and implicated Strickland. Owing to the fact that these subjects had been prosecuted in Nova Scotia for a similar offence. the com- plainant in Charlottetown declined to proceed and his goods were re- turned to him front Nova Scotia.

During the past four years his main interest seamed to center ini the work of the church. lie had been Sunday School superinten- dent of his church for the past two years. All the children and young people looked up to him as a spirit- ual leader. During the summer of loss he was largely responsible for the complete renovation of the church parsonage.

The case of Everett Mannie- Breaking. Entering and Theft at Montague.

"Durlng the night of May 16. 1949. four business establishments including a jewelry store in the Town of Montague were broken into ‘and a considerable quantity of jewelry and confectionery and to- bacco was stolen. Included in the stolen articles were several Buiova watches. lighters and rings. The Pmlsrietars of the stores concern- ed rsported the matter to our Montague detachment and request- ed assistance in locating the thief.

“Investigation was commenced at once. The rriodus operandi was the same in each case. A small pane of glass had been smahed

in and opening the night latch. It was learned that Everett Mclrinls was in Montague over the week- end. He had recently been re- leased from the reformatory and since one of the stores which had been entered was owned by a man who had been instrumental in sending him there, it was consid- ered that Mclnnis was a good sus- pect.

"It was found that he had ar- rived in Montague from Charlotte- town on a bicyclg and had left during the night of the breaks. En- quiries revealed that ariy on the morning of the 17th e was seen on the highway returning to Char- lottetown on the bicycle by sev- eral people, He had also been seen in Charlottetown at 10:00 a. m. on the 17th. and had apparent- ly been showing something to a man in a theatre foyer. Mclnnis was finally located in the late pm. of the same day and was found to have some of the stolen goods in his possession.

"He later showed the investi- gators where he had hidden the remainder and with the exception of some candy bars and packages of cigarettes. the stolen goods were all recovered.

"McInnis was taken before the Magistrate on the same evening and pleaded "guilty" to four charges of breaking. entering and theft. He was sentenced to serve two years in the penitentiary on each charge, sentences to run con- currently.

"An interesting sideiight to this case is that Mclnnia rode to Mon- tague on Sunday afternoon from Charlottetown and returned through the night after making the breaks. a distance of approxi- matgly thirty-five rrilles each way. on a bicycle which proved to have been one he had stolen for the purpose. He told the investigators where they could find it in the back yard of a store where he had left it on finishing his trip.

"During. the past f=w months a series of small breaks have occur- red in the Aiberton Detachment urea and considerable time spent in the investigation was without result. On November 30, 1949. word was received at the detach- ment thst the Co-operative Store in Bloomfield had been entered and a quantity of merchandise stolen. This was the second break at this store. The other happen- ed on the l5th~of September. The safe was found to have been tampered with without success and from the articles stolen. it appeared that the burglars were anything but expert. At the same time it was learned that another store in a nearby community had also been entered on the same night. Coliicut and Cousins had been suspects in previous breaks and during the invesilgation- of these latest offences. it was learn- ed that they had a wood cutting camp in the woods where they were engaged in getting out wood. The camp was visited by the in- vestigators and a considerable amount of stolen goods was locat- ed. One Alfred Cousins. brother to Edmund. was present at'the camp and the other two suspects were cutting wood nearby. _It, was noted that they were both wear- ing artlcles of the stolen clothing. ?'As a result of questioning the trio, five breaks in the district were -- ' ‘ ii; ‘ ‘ for and these men are at present be- fore the Courts, each ci-iarged_ with

TORONTO, March 9 — More titan half of the deaths and serious injuries caused by accidents in Canada ‘are the direct result of ig- norance and lack of advance train- ing. according to Dr. Harvey Doney, national director of the Canadian Red Cross Disaate Ser- vices.

"'I‘his is particularly true of our drowning casualties, where lack of water safety knowledge still ac- counts for the vast majorities of our facilities or near facilities," he said.

“On the highways. the apparent carelessness and ignorance of both drivers and pedestrians is making the annual death toll mount high- er and higher.”

Self-help in the case of disaster can save many lives now lost through ignorance or panic, he thinks. ‘

He cited a case from the dis- astrous fire aboard the steamship Noronic last autumn in Toronto when Red Cross Disaster Services aided the survivors. Mr. and Mrs.

Red Cross classes in these sub- jects'are maintained by subscrip- tions to the national appeal for $5.000.000 being onducted by the Society this March.

In 1949, nearly 1,500 students were qualified as standard first aiders in fled Cross classes.
