A LECTURE ON DR. CHALMERS.
“Dr. Chalmers” was the subject of a lecture delivered in the Valleyfield Pres- bvterian Church on Tuesday, the 9th inst., by the Rev. Roderick. McLean, paster.4 Though a small admission fee was charg- ed, the sum thus collected to be used for charitable purposes, avery large number attended. The lecture was instructive. The life and business in which Chalmers lived were weli described. The scene por- traying Dr. Chalmers teaching a class of poor beys in some back street in London was i lustrative of the character of the man. His coliege fife, as well as world- wide celebrity as a sincere and earnest preacher, were referred to. That Dr. Chalmers was no narrow bigot, that the love and carity of his divine master was alive in his heart, was shown by the ac- tive and decided stand Dr. Chalmers had taken in the Catholic Emancipation Bill of 1829 and previously. He was not sat- isfied that any should suffer on account of thei? creed or religion. He knew that the rights of allelasses were sacred rights, and his eloquence and zeal were directed to have the rights restored to his Roman Catholic fellow citizens in 1829. Rev. Mr. McLean had not hitherto signalled his ab- ility as a lecturer. He has done so as a preacher and it would seem that as a lec- turer also he is to be a success. One oF THE AUDIENCE.

THE LATE MR, RICHARD WESTAWAY.
The news of the death of Mr. Richard Westaway, of Albion Bay, which event occurred on the 30th of January last, was heard with sadness and regret wherever he was known. ‘The fatal disease, which ran its course in a few days, was blood poisor ning, and although numbers knew of his illness, none were expecting his death until a short time before it happened.
3ut all human aid proved unavailing, and he passed away at the advanced age of 76 years. Mr. Westaway was highly esteemed by his friends and acquaintances, owing to the sterling integrity, uprightness and kindness of his daily life. He was a faithful husband, affectionate father and kind neighbor. By h's unflinching pur pose, industry and punctuality in busi- ness he amassed a considerable amount of wealth, and his succe3s in life should be a stimulus to every youth in the land.
Mr. Westaway was born in Devonshire, Eogland, in 1819, and was brovght over by his parents w ho came to C harlottetow n the following yearin a brig called the Plymouth Rock Hero. Sone time after _ s parents settled on the farm adjoining
. Andrew’s Point on which they lived cal their death. Deceased worked on the farm until he became of age and then truck out for himself. He worked~ in shipyards watil he thoroughly understood ip building, after which he and his
brother, the late L. J. Westaway, built a vessel on their own resources, He after- wards built quite a number of vessels and made several voyages across the ocean to his native land. His enterprise in this respect was most suc cessful as he left an
estate worth many thousands of dollars.
In 1852 Mr. Westaway married Miss Mary Creed, daughter of the late Benjamin Creed. The issue of their marriage was twelve chtldren—eight sons and four daughters. Of these eight survive—five sons and three daughters, who are all in comfortable circumstances. By his wall he has left a very handsome sum to his
widow, and the rest of his estate is divided among his surviving sons and daughters, with the except‘on of a few bequests to
some of his grand-children. His remains
were interred i in the cemetery of the Eng- lish Church: at Georgetown, of which church he was a member.

Whereas, Believing such withdrawal at the present time of low prices would mean disastrous results, especially as we-haye no cold storage provided, neither direct steam communication with Great Britain, both of which we bave good reason to be- lieve will be forthcoming another year.
Therefore Resclved, That this meeting piace on record its desire that the Dom- inion Government should reconsider _ its decision and assume control of the Island factories for at least this season on terms same as heretofore.
Further Resolved, That a copy of the above be forwarded to the Dairy Commis- siouer and Senator Ferguson, with a re- quest that they use their ioflugnee to ac- complish the object embodied therein.
Mr. Ewen McEachern moved the _fol- lowing resolution, which was carried un- animously, viz :

Whereas, Learning from the experience of the past season the necessity of cold storage in Cnarlottetown in connectivn with our dairying industry, and fearing the delay ofits ‘construction . shoukt the cost of its erection be wholly borne by the co- operative companies, W hile at present the most, if not all, of the m are consider- ably in debt for the building of their own separate factories; and
Whereas The enterprise which becomes bencfisial to the farmers of the lelaud must also necessarily receive the approval of our own population in general;
Therefore Reso‘ ved, T bat it is the opin on of this company that our Local Govern- ment should take the matter under their consideration and by way of encourage- ment offer a a for its promotion.
Also Resolved, That should the dairying companies Of the Island deem it expedient to join in its construction, provided they be subsidized by the Government, we, as a company, may be looked upon as being willing to bear our proportionate share of its cost.
