LITERARY NOTES.

Dr. Parkhurst has coined a new word, and ij saptness and clever construction are quite Ekely to make it famous. The eminent reformer’s word is “Andromania,” and of it he says: “There is an element in the feminine world that is suffering from what I shall venture to call ‘Andromania.’ The word is not an English one, for the reason, I suppose, that the English lan- guage-makers never supposed that we should need such a term. It is constructed on the same principle as the word ‘Anglo- mania,” which means a passionate aping of everything that is English. ‘Andro- mania’ means similarly, a passionate aping of everything thatismannisb.” Dr. Park- hurst makes his new word serve as the title for his first article in the next issue of The Ladies’ Home Journal, and uses=it for a vigorous treatment of the type of women for whom he invented it,

The Governor of Kansas, in the Janu- vary North American, draws an awful picture of the condition of the Kansas far- mere.

To begin with, the aggregate of the real estate mortgages on farms in the state ia $168,000,000, while the liens on chattels amount to $48,000,000 more and 10,000 people are driven out of house and home every year by forelozure.

Nor is there any prespect of improve- ment. Prices are low and the tendency is still downward. To produce a_ bushel of wheat costs fifty cents, and the sell- ing price is only forty cents. Twenty-five vears ago two bushels ef grain produced $5; now twelve bushels will not yield the same sum. A few years since a good horse would fetch $75; now eight horses will not bring more than the same sam.

No wonder the farmers of the Western States are so ready to move across the bor- der into the Canadian Northwest.

Rowe, Jan. 17.—A despatch from Mas- sowah says General Baratieri, commander of Itaian troops in East Africa, again met Chief Ras Mungasola and his army lase evening, after persuing them ten hours. A battle was fought south of Coatit. The l-alian artillery cut down the enemy by hundred-, and and eventually put them to flight. The Italian victory is complete and decisive. The enemy left his dead wounded, arms, ammunition and quantites of stores on the field. Among the wound- ed were several ehiefs.

The most careful calculation as to the financial loss inflicted by the late cold snap in Florida places it at seven million dollars.
