HANLAN Ss W e_comeSro Amgerica.—A New York despatch of the [lth says :—‘‘ Several politicians and ex-oarsmen went down the bay on the revenue cutter to-day, and wel- comed Hanlan, the oarsman. A deputation of Canadians also welcomed him.”’

As will be seen, by reference to the proper column, a young gentleman from Cape Tra. verse has carried away the daughter of our old friend H. J. Calbeck, Esq. ‘The bride was the recipient of a number of very hanlsome presents in silver, vases, glassware and other articles useful and ornamental. On the morn- ing after the ceremony the happy couple took the morning boat to Picton on their wedding tour. We wish them every happiness in their journey through life.— Patript.

Vicroria Division.—At a regular meeting of Victoria Division, No. 4, held on Monday evening last, the following staff of officers were chesen for the current quarter :—W. P., Robert Minnard; W. A Ha trax despatch says :—The arrivals of fish this week have$been large. The prices of dry fish are certain to go down, as the catch is gcod, and our fishermen will make more out of the low rates than out of prices affected by scarcity. Dry tish receipts, 13,108 quintals, including arrival of 1841 quintals from Boston. Shipments in sume period last year were 4,- 733 quintals. Mackerel receipts are, for the week ending July 8th, 2,169 bbls.; shipments 1,795 bbls., of which 1,577 bbls. went in West Indiamen.

Manrropa Marine Sarery.—The Montreal Witness says :—“ We learn from an Ottawa correspondent that the Deputy Minister of Marine, Mr. William Smith,§will, on Thurs- day next, leave for Manitoba on an ofiicial tour. Among other purposes of his visit will be that of fixing the sites for lighthouses, &c., { along the several rivers and lake coasts. The prompt action o! the Hon. Minister ef Marine in caring so early for the necessities of naviga- tion in the new province proves the interest he takes in the Department.”

A Warrtwin1.—About 4 p. m. on Satur- day last, a quantity of hay (about 100 lbs. in weight) lying in front of the residence of Hon. L. #. Baker, Yarmouth, was caught by a whirlwind and lifted in the air over 200 feet. Aiter being whirled about in the air, the hay separated into simall bunches, some descend- ing to the southward of the jail, and others falling near the spot whence they were carried aloft. Outside the limited area of the whirl- wind—a few yards in diameter—there was only a light air from the N. W.—Hz, Herald,

Tue Hon. Mr. Langevin is expected in Ottawa, on his return from his successful mission to England, this week. He will be met at Rimouski by several leading public men, who will accompany him to Quebec, where he will doubtless receive a hearty re- ception from his friends and admirers. On his arrival in Ottawa he will be presented with the handsome oil portrait of himself, re- cently painted {by Forbes, of Toronto, which was subscribed for by the Conservative mem- bers of the last Parliament, and he will like- wise be tendered a public banquet.

The only igects of which the public are yet in possession may be gleaned from section 13 of ‘A Law respecting truckmen and truckage” ( d 13th June, 1879) which enacts that ‘‘Every Licensed truckman shall have affixed to his harness, for the purpose of drawing his sled cr sleigh, at least one good and sufficient open bell. It may beseen, at a glance, that no provender will be required, not even the very small amount of fuel supplied the Keeley motor--the only condition to be implicitl observed being that the bell be open mouth

a 1. Section 14: Prohibits the throwing over- board or leaving of dead or decaying fish, or remains of offal ot tish, or other marine animals, within any water where fishing is carried on, or upon any fishing bank; also forbids leaving the same in apy net or other fishing apparatus.

2. Section 14, Sub-section 2: Provides that dead or decaying fish, or any other deleterious substance, shall not be drawn into, or allowed to pass into, or be leit, or remain in any water frequented by any kinds of fish men- tioned in the fishery laws.

3. Section 13, Sub-section 7: Bag-nets and Rab-nets and fish-ponnds are prohibited, ex- cepting under special license.

Besides the fines imposed by said Statute, any offender against the Fishery Laws is liable to the forfeiture of the nets, material, implements or appliances used in connection with the offence.

Fishery Officers may seize upon their own view, er on complaint, any fishing gear sub- ject to confiscation, and fine offenders forth- with.

British and foreign fishermen alike are required to conform to the Canadian fishery laws.

It having been established in evidence that certain kinds of nets used for mackerel and other fish are fished ia contraventwn of the fishery laws, by destroying quantities of small fish, besides mature fishes which are thrown away dead or dying, or are left to decay on the tishing grounds, or within the inshore waters; the tishery officers are instructed to strictly enforce the fishery laws passed to prevent such illegal and injurious prac- tices.

They are also instructed that British sub- jects, when fishing in British waters, are bound to conform in every respect to the Can- adian fishery laws, and that foreigners fishing within three miles of the coasts of Canada, under treaties, in common with British sub- jects, are required to do so in conformity with the fishery. laws which govern the operations of British fishermen.
