HOW THEY DIED.

Published accounts, says the Army and Navy Gazette, show that Lord Airlie, Lieut. Wright, and the non- commissioned officers and men of the 12th Prince of Wales’ Royal lancers, returned as killed in the fighting near Pretoria, lost their lives in a splendid charge. Some guns of the Royal Horse artillery were found to be in daager, and the regiment received the order to press forward and rescue them. The order was no sooner given than the horses were at full gallop. The work was admirably done. The Boers re- tired before the rush of the lancers, and having got well out of danger suddenly dismounted and opened a terrible fire under which Lord Airlie and Lieutenant Wright fell. Capt. Fgerton-Green, who was reported mis- sing after the enaggement, was captur- ed by the enemy, and is now a prison- er in their hands. He was

slightly wounded.

SERGENT BEATTIE’S BRAVE ACT.

Asked by a windsor ‘Recorder, re porter ‘What was the bravest deed you saw done in South Africa?’ Private Erine Craig, who has returned from the war, said; ‘I think it was that of Sergt. Bert. Beattie, of Toronto. When Color-Sergeant Shrive was wounded twice in the arm, Beattie was brave enough to carry his comrade across the firing line. Both crossed without receiving further harm. It was one of those lucky escapes: but. nevertheless, a brave deed. Sergt. Beattie, the hero, afterwards died at Bloeméontein. He was the son of Mr. Wm. Beattie, Canadian representative of the Scottish- American.’

It purports to be addressed to and record a conversation between the governer and the Fantal, but that is possibly a subterfuge to impose on the magistrate The Fantal is notoriously anti-Christian and his letter cannot fail to have evil consequence. It exhorts the governor to authorize all magistrates to compel native Christians to return to their former religion and make them give security that they will not again enjer a Christian church. All furniture of churches and Christians is to be con- fiscated and proclamations areto be issued exhorting the people to abstain from robbing Christian who renounce their faith.

Prohibitionists and Government.

Toronto, July 20—The Council of the Dominion Alliance has fully debated the action to be taken in the forthcominy

geueral elections by probibitioniste. Major Bond, of Montreal, epoke at some length on the attitude of Quebec towards pro- hibition. Sir Wilfrid Laurier had Sbeen quoted as stating that the people of Que- bec were in practice prohibitionitse. The fact was that the people of Lower Canada were not so much probibitionissts as they were temperate and frugal. Except in the Eastern Towosbips, there was little. de- mand for pruhibition. They could reach the French-Canadians on tmis question either through literature or threugh the Roman Catholic Church. As it wae, a better result would have been shown jn Quebec in the plebiscite, had it not beea that there were gross frauds at the polle, and misrepresentations made tu the people by Mesers. Tarte and Joly. He believed that between 30,000 and 40,000 votes were recorded improperly. He did not place much reliance upon what Sir Wilfrid said, When it was represented to him that there was corruption at the polls, he replied that ope must expect certain practices of that sort at every election. This statement came home to him when the recent elec- tion frauds were exposed, which did the Government so much harm.

A Diamond Swallowed .

Toronto, Jaly 20.—A. Warner, an 18- year-old lad in the employ of J. J. Zock and Co., jewellery manufacturers, swal lowed a large diamond worth $160, while fooling with the gem yesterday afternoon. He was taken to the emergency Hospital, where emetics were administered. The young man took the affair as a good joke until the emetics were brough into play. But half an hour’s vomiting did not bring the jewel to light. Warner is still the poesessor of one large diamond, on which he cannot immediately realize.
