This morning Farmer Brown's Boy had decided to go over to The Big River where the water was flowing too fast for Jack Frost to cover it with ice. He wanted to see if any of his water-loving feathered friends were staying over there. He knew that probably he would find Mr. and Mrs. Quack, the Mallard Ducks. Ind perhaps their ousins, the Black Ducks. He had known Rattles the Kingfisher to spend a winter in that neigh- borhood, doing his fishing there in the open water every day. He hop- ed this morning to find Longlegs. the Great Blue Heron. Perhaps Longlegs hadn't gone South this year. Some years he didn't. So, with Flip, the Terrier, Farm- er Brown's Boy started across the snow-ocevered Green Meadows. Looking over to the Old Pasture, he saw a spot of red. He knew it had to be one of two folks, either Reddy Fox or Mrs. Reddy. He wondered how they were making out this hard winter weather: how they were finding J to eat. He never ceased to wonde how his friends in fur and feathers managed live from day to day when ev rything seemed against them. As usual Flip raced far ahead of him. Flip had a lot to do on walks like this. He had to run from side to side as well as ahead. and examine everything in sight. Flip was always hopeful of find- ing someone to chase. He loves ex- citement, and there is no excite- ment to compare with that of chas- ing someone.
