Tks programme was well rendered and wae highly appreciated by all present as was shown by the applause which each performer received. After the programme the baskets, #bich were beautifully decoras ted and we'l filled, were auctioned off by Mr. W. Godfrey in a highly creditatl- manner. After partaking of the contents of the baskets the audieuce dispersed with the singing of the National Antbam. The committee take this opportunity ot thank~ ing all those who kindiy assisted in mak- ing this one of the best socials of the eea- sop. The handsome sum of thirty dollars was realiz-d which goes towards furnishing the new school hon-e.

Port Townsexp, Wash., Feb. 14—The steamer ‘Olympia,’ bas arrived from the Orient bringing late advices as follows: Thecity of New Chwang is in a state of terror, occssiened by the appearance of thousands of mounted bandits. @utrages have been commited on residerts. The merchants have moved their goodsto a treaty port, \wenty miles south of the in» vaded districts. Grave fears are eater- tained that the bandits contemplate a raid on the latter place, which is being fortified.

By the breaking of the iceon a river leadingto Tien-Tsin two hundred people were precipitated into the water. A bun- dred and six were drowned.

A report has reached official circles at Pekin that an assasin was despatched to Japan to take the life of the Emperor of Japan. Great excitement was caused by the rumor, and a thorough investigation has been ordered.

Lonpon, Feb. 14 —The Daily Telegraph publishes the following despatch from Cavenne, capital of French Guiana: The jadicial officer who has ju-t reiurned here from a visit to Dreyfus on the lie du Diable, informs me thatthe prisoner is in good health, but declines to reply to the written interrogations of the Court of Cassation on the ground tbat his answers are inaccurately transmitied to Paris.

Dissension has arisen over a portion of the estate of the late Empress of Austria between the Austro-Hungarian embassy at London, the Britieh estate of adminias- tration and the Bank of Eogland. It ap. pears that the Empress had $2,000,000 deposited in the bank. Last November, when the heirs were arranging the division of her property, they asKed payment for this deposit. But the bank refused to pay the aum in its entirety, asserting ite right to deduct @ certain amount for succession fees, and in support of this claim quoted the jaw which was recently enacted, to the eff-ct that all property of foreigners pot l.viog in Great Britain sbeusi be subject to taxation in the event of a settlement on the death of the foreign client. Count Franz Deym, the Austro-Mungarian am- bassador, disputes the eqnity of this ruling, declariog that as the British Govs ernment has never imposed succession taxes On property of foreign ambassadors who bave diei at London, the same pri- vilege should be extended to foreign sov- ereigos. The qnestion will be decided by the chancellor of the exchequer.
