Os Thursday evening, in answer to Mr. Caine, Sir Charles Dilke said : The number of pauper children sent to Canada by Boards of Guardians during the season from May to August last year was 130, of whom 37 were from metropolitan and 93 from country unions. {6 Marine and Pisheries Depertment has come to the conclusion that the millions ot dead fish now floating on Lake Ontario are young shad hatched at Seth Green's fish breed- ing establishment at Rochester, N. Y., and placed in the streams tributary to the Lake. It is also believed that the falling off in the catch of whitefish in Lake Vatario is due to the poisoning of the water by the dead shad. Representations will probably be made to the United states Gov- ernment respecting this matter. Seth Green, Lowever, emphatically denies that the mil lions of dead fish now floating on Lake Unta- rio are shad. He says they are a kind of fish known as alewives, but of the shad species. he shad he placed in the lake do not die. He accounts for the scarcity of whitefish by say- ing it is due to continued overfishing with pound nets and not to poisoning.
