The Company has always found it tn its interest to divide the economies effected iu production and distribution with the Con- sumer, and since its existence the Con- sumer bas, u the average, had a better article at a lower price than previously.

of altar cloths, lamps, etc, having one door directly opening to the sanctuary floor and another connecting with the side aisle space, out of which an archway connects with the nave of the church, and in which is a staircase leading from the sacristy and large choir-room below.

On the other side of the sanctuary is a priests’ robing room connected with side aisle space and elevator, and staircase from sacristy and Bishop's vestry below. This aisle space is connected with the main body of the Cathedral by an archway under which all processions enter the nave,

HOW THE INSIDE IS TREATED.

The interior of the building will be treat- ed as if it was the interior space of a large musical instrument. All the best cathedrals in Europe have practically resolved them- selves into this condition, aad each one ac- tually possesses a certain clearly-detined keynote of its own which, if struck by voice, flute, violin or organ pipe sets the whole in- terior mass of air into sympathetic vibra- tion and intensifies the original keynote and all its harmonics vith millions of addi- tional tones and overtones, so that the coarsest-voiced organs, which many of the large Cathedral organs are known to be, sound mellow and beautiful. The key note of Notre Dame in Paris is A. and of Westminster Abbey is G. The wall spaces immediately behind the sanctuary choirand organ choir will be panelled with shallow box panels on the principal of the construction in the body of a violin, having a flat, clear dry spruce face, three eights of am inch in thickness an air 8 of 24 inches, and @ back of sound, ane, thin Island maple, to act as intensifying sounding boards to all sounds produced by the choirs and organ. By the way,the Island spruce, fir and maple are identically the same as the spruce and maple trees of the European appenines, which furnished the wood for the celebrated Cremona violins. An assortment of Canadian spruce and maple has already been sent to Germany for g in violin manofacture, and has been pronounced to be of the very finest tone quality. THK MUSICAL SONOROUSNESS. The groined vaulting in the roof will be form- ed of clear, hard sounding spruce to aid the musical sonorousness of the building. This sonorousness is a different quality to what is termed echo in a building. Echo is caused by the rebounding of sound waves through long spaces of air from one fiat surface to another until they reach the ear, a short time after the original sound has reached it directly. By

breaking up the surfaces of all the walls at the ends o the long air avenues, the echoes will be avoided, by placing the pulpit in front of one of the

octogonal walls of the central nave space the wall immediately behind wi!l form a natural sounding board to add resonance to the speak- er’s voice and throw all its strength into the bely of the building. . ss t is proposed to tune the n carefa

and oma to the keynote of ‘the Cathedral, Thus, if the keynote is a few pulses under the natural tone of G, the G of the organ may be tuned exactly to that tone, so that, when the instrument is played, it will be so re-enforced from the vibrating air in every portion of the Cathedral that its tone quality, or timbre, as the musicians call it, will be wonderfml.

When a peal of bells is placed in the tower, they may also be tuned exactly to the key- note of the Cathedral by filing a steel tunin fork until it coincides exactly to the Cathedra note, and sending it to the bell founder. An open tube from the belfry to the interior eir 8 of the nave could be simply arranged tor sound conduction. From the keyboard of the organ the peal of bells in the tower, with light, moveable, weoden mallet attachments, could be under control of the organist, who might use their tones in grand and beautiful effects in combination with the organ and in- atrumentalists and vocalists of the choir.

le, and the chapel below will accommo, Tate five hundred and forty people. When both chapel and Cathedral are used together, if required, with separate services, two thous- and seven hundred and eighty people may be present. MR, CHAPPELL'S PLAN OUTLINED,

The site upon which the proposed cathedral bvilding will stand has a frontage on Great George St, of 160 ft., and running back on each side street for a distance of about 270 ft. Itis proposed toset the church in the centre of the lot with the principal front on Great George St., and 20 ft. back from street line. The building consists of nave, aisles, clear-story, transept and sanctuary, and follows generally the form of a Latin Cross. In designing the plan Mr. Chappell’s object was to arrange a buliding the nave piers of which would obstruct the view of as few persons as possible, and asthey are now laid off present but little obstruction. The dimensions of the church are as follows : length over all, 205 ft., width across nave

aisles, 72 ft., and across transepts 96 ft. The principal entrance will be from Great George St. through a triple archway into acommodious vestibule. The gallery entrance and exit will be through tower on south side so that persons coming from the gallery will not __ inter- fere with those passing out of the body of the church. Entrances are also arranged at east corners of transepts and similar entrances at vestry on each side of building, making in all eight entrances and exits from the church.

The seating capacity of the churcb, in- cluding the gallery at the east end (which will also contain the organ and choir) will be about 1,700 us, aod Mr. Chappell estimates t the aisles will afford standing room for 1,000 more, mak- ing in all 2,700 persons, The sanctuary will be at the west end, and will be 48x36 feet in size and terminate in an apse or semicircular sweep.

SOME INSIDE ARRANGEMENTS.

The ceiling will be in the form of a half dome, richly moulded and pannelled in plaster, which will admit of its being decor- ated in colors later on, The light will come from above through seven arched windows at about the height of the clear-story walls striking directly over the altar, Ves- tries with closets for the clergymen’s vest- ments, &c., are arranged on each side of the sanctuary. As the extreme cost of using dressed stone in the piers and arches which support the clear-story walls and roof oe that material out of the question.

opp appearance. This arcade will & prominent feature of the interior and the walls directly above being plas- tered and finished with rough surface of a buff tint will harmonize nicely with the

drab brick. The walls of the aisles, clear-story and

transepts will be pierced for large and ample windows, which will be glazed with cathedral glass of a tint that will cast « pleasant and agreable light throughout the building. The ceiling of the nave will be finished in ash in ten panels following closely the semicircular sweep of the roof trusses forming what is known as a_ barrel- vaulted ceiling, which, intersecting at the crossing of the transepts will be carried on the diagonal trusses that support the roof. This form of ceiling is simple and reason- able in cost and will have a fine effect, and is at the same time the very best to follow for acoustic reasons.

THE BASEMENT CHAPEL.

Beneath the transepts and part of the nave, a chapel capable of seating about 800 persons has been arranged and will be well lighted with large windows placed in the walls of the north and south transepts. A sanctuary, with a large vestry, 18x20 feet, on each side, is placed directiy under the sanctuary on the main floor, with room behind.

The confessionals are placed in the main room or chapel against the transept walle, and so located that the light will strike over them and dows. There will be four entrances to the basement chapel, one in each corner of the room, and the ceiling will be 16 feet high.

The east end of the basement can be fitted up for Sunday school purposes, if desired. Mr. Chappell prefers placing the boiler for heating central if possible, and has so marked it on the plan; but if the room should be needed for other purposes, the boiler could be placed at the rear end of the sanctuary.

THE EXTERIOR WALLS.

The exterior walls wil be built through- out of Nova Scotia freestone, rock-faced. A tower and spire reaching to a height of 186 feet will be a prominent and imposing feature of the southeast corner of

the building; Mr. Chappell’s sol- ution of the problem being to get effect by good proportion and _ out-

lines rather than elaborate details, and mak- ing the corner tower massive and imposing enough to group well with the building and hold its own agaiast its surroundings, and which will at the same time relive the builiing of any squatty appearance it might otherwise have.

A modern Cathedralchurch should present uo unmietskable signs of being such, and to that end Mr. Chappell has designed the building in the Recmanesque or round arch style, which he considers more monu- mental and imposing than the ordinary Gothic, and has also the advantage of being more readily adapted to modern needs.

The construction of a church of this magnitude, using as it does about 10,000 tons of stone, should be carried out on cor- rect principle and be of the most thorough description.
