It East had answered the one- heart opening with one Spade in- stead of e notrump. the outcome would have been a, great deal better for him. As it was. South felt sure that with West bidding diamonds and East preferring that suit to hearts (witness hlo failure to return to the major), North must be very short. of diamonds and consequently might have length in spades. It was largely this consideration that in- fluenced South to make his dan- gerous bid. Sliding down on the moonboaml. or seeming to, across the glade from high in the trees on one side to low on the trunks of trees on the opposite side were Timmy the Flying squirrel. Mrs, Timmy and several of their relatives. They were having such fun that they had forgotten to eat, or perhaps they thought there would be time enough later for that. Darting in and out. among them as they crossed and recrossed the moonlit glade, twisting, turning, wheeling flying as none but others of his own kind can, was Flitter the Bat. He too was having a, good time in the moonlight, hut he hadn't forgotten to ent. No sir, he hadn't forgotten that. He was eating as he flew. catching insects flying high or low, as the case might be.

Mrs. Llghtfoot the Deer was ihere with her two pretty lawns still wearing their spotted coats, soon to exchange them for plain onils. They too, felt the witrhery of the moonbesms and gnmholerl together at the edge of the glade while their mother look- ed on in soft-eyed pleasure.

In all the Green wrest there ivns no more delightful scene than in the moonlight glade, where fun and frolic ruled on the ground and In the air. It was fearsome fun and frolic, for each of the funsters knew that they were in rzreater danger there than if they Kent Hmong the Black Shadows crowding around the bright glsde. But perhaps this made them en. Joy their fun all the more.
