Daniet Bremyer and his son James were drowned on Monday morning while coming from Bay View to Digby for fishing supplies. It was blowing hard at the time, and a squall striking the boat she capsized, and having on board a quantity of ballast, sank immediately. The bodies have not yet been recovered.

Silver, of Halifax, has taken a local government scholarship, which, had he heen eighteen years of age, would have entitled him to £150 stg. per annum for three years at a British University. Mx. N. J. Gronee, the new United States Consul at this port, arrived last evening and entered upon his duties to-day. Mr. George is a native of Fayettville, Tenn., and is a lawyer by profession. He isa gentleman of pleasing address, and will doubtless soon in- gratiate himself into the good graces of our people. Vice-Consul Hickey, who has been scting Consul for some months past, has re- signed his position and leaves for his home in Newark, N. J., this evening. During his stay amongst us Dr. Hickey has made many friends who will regret his early departure.

The body had on rub- ber boots, oilskin coat buttoned, no hair on the head, face disfigured, &e. Heavy pans of ice were coming in, and the wind blowing heavily. Capt. Embree could not get the | body then, as it was so necessary to see to the | safety of the vessel. Early this morning, however the corpse was got near Grant s Point. We regret to learn that Maurice Hanning, son of the late Maurice Hanning, of New Harmony, King’s Co., was drowned while river driving last week, near Bangor, Maine. The particulars of his death have not yet come to hand. He was a young man who bore a most excellent character, and his une timely end will be deeply regretted by all who knew him.

Up to this date last year only two square rigged vessels had arrived, and already there are twelve barks and one ocean tramp steam- ship, Lord Warrick, 300 feet long and a gross tonnage of 2,600 tons, anchored in West Bay, and loading deals, besides two barks at Spencer's Island. There are also thirty-five more to arrive during the summer.

GALATEA.—This popular comedy composed by the celebrated W. S. Gilbert, author of Mikado, &c., will be on the boards at the Lyceum to-night. Of the performance in St. John the 7'eleyraph says: A most original and no less intelligent Galatea, was that presented by Miss Claire Scott at the Institute,Saturday afternoon. Her conception of the role differs materially from that of any other actress, but there is much to commend her reading as the correct one. Mary Anderson's Galatea is more conscious in manner; Mlle. Ithea’s is less sympathetic in action; Miss Scott's is a highly natural and broadly harmonious character, full of the freedom of innocence and adding mometitarily a wider strength as she realized her possession of unknown powers. Ably seconded as was the star by her support, the result was one of the most enjoyable performances of the week. Mr. Hayes’ Pygmalion was as polished as it was vigorous. Mr. Ireson was an excellent Lucippa. Mr. Neville’s Chrysos was a brightly humor- ous as Well‘as finished impersonation. Miss Cody did her best work for the week as Cynisca. “Miss Stenson was a most amusing Daplide, amd Miss Katie Scott a charming Myrina.
