Stocks Begin New Year On Downward Trend

NEW YORK, Jan. 3—(AP)—Sell- ing pressure concentrated in one brief interval today set the stock market back by farctions to more than 2 points with some losses go- ing beyond 3.

Trading volume stepped up sharp- ly on the break with more than a third of the day's transactions of 980,000 shares being made in the hour before. noon.

Both before and after the sharp slide, the market was quiet and prices moved narrowly.

The Associated press average of 60 stocks fell 1.1 points, equaling its widest fall since Nov. 9. It stood a‘. 63.4 the lowest point since Nov. 30. The industrial component of the average dropped 1.4 points, rails were off .9 of a point, and utilities were down only .3 of a point.

The declines were spread through- ouf every major group in the list. but the rails, steels and motors were among those under the great- est pressure. Some shares stood against the trend. Among _ihese were American Broadcasting Co., up 3 1-8 to a new 1948-49 high of 10 1-2. Packard Motor Car, up 1-8 and Gay- lord Container, up 1-4 to 21 7-8.

Some of the widest losers were Nickel Plate off 3 1-4, Union Pacific of.‘ 2 1-2, Kennecott Copper off 2', American Smelting off 2, Du Punt off 3 1-2, Allied Chemical off 2 1 1-2. Magnovox 1 5-8, Skelly Oil off 2 1-2. Superior Oll offalifornla off 10 at 1 157.

TORONTO. Jan. 3—(CP)-— All grous opened the new year on u downward trend on the Toronto Slock Exchange. Golds and west- ern oils showed the steepest losses in today's dull action. Base metals were quietly weaker.

Western oils opened on a stronger note, slipped towards mid-session and closed down more than a point on the exchange’s index. The group showed a solid list of declines. Home Oll dipped 5-8 at 13 1-2 and Pacific Petroleum was down 23 at $2.82. Anglo-Canadian, Calgary and Edmonton, Atlantic Oll, Foothills and Central Leduc were down 5 to 20 cents.

United Kingdom was allocated 400.- 000 bushels of wheat under the Can- iidian agreement in export business reported on Winnipeg Grain Ex- change today. Oats and barley fu- tures prices moved narrowly in a dull session. Prices took an easier tone on commission house selling and lack of aggressive demand in early trade.

buying prompted by fi:mness at Chicago reduced losses and in some cases brought gains. some American buying in rye. The price of class two wheat was re- duced one cent from Friday.

Senior golds dipped quietly and junior producers were also easier. Action was very quiet with Nichol- son a lone active trader for a small decline.

MONTREAL, Jan. 3—(CP)— Al- though losses narrowly edged out gains. on the Montreal Stock Ex- change today, selected issues were on u sharp downswing with losses out-numbering advances about 4 to 1 Four stocks were down more than a point.

Trading was fairly active and 10 issues had turnovers exceeding 1,- 000 shares each. International util- ities was the day's most active stock with a turnover of 8,675 shares. Mines were on a slight uptrend as trading was brisk.

Today's industrial sales were ap- proximately 43.7000 shares while mines totalled 161,800 shares.

Closing averages showed banks off .01 at 27.57; utilities of! .5 at 73.2; indusirials off 1.0 at 130.1; pa- pers off 5.14 at 334.78 and golds up .04 at 62.74.

Papers were on a sharp down- trend. Price and International Pa- per were off 1 1-2 and 1 3-8 respec- tively. Balhurst and Consolidated Paper lost 1-2 each while Fraser and Abitlbl dropped minor frac- tions.

International Utilities was up 1-4 at 15 1-8 after reaching a new high of 15 J-2 earlier in the day. Brazilian and Bell were shaded.

Base metals had Consolidated Smeiters down 1 3-4 points at 120 34 as Aluminum and International Nickel fell 3-4 and 1-2 respectively. Hudson Bay Mining moved ahead a minor fraction while Aluminum Pfd. reached a new high of 26.

Oils were on a fractional do\vn- swing. International Petroleum dip- ped 3-8 Ar Home Oil. McCoii and Imperial Oil skidded 1-4 each. Anglo-Canadian reached a new high of $4.80.
