Prince County

HORSES.

Horses were not in such numbers as we anticipated. ut. there were several very fine animals on @he grounds. Mr. We. ae Mills, draft stallion Princ of Wales reared by the owner is indeed a Prince among horses, and Mr. McFarlane’s carriage sta) lion is a beauty. But on the whole the show of stallions was rather meagre for Prince Couaty. The show of young mares however, was large. With such mothers as they will make there is little doubt that the judicious farmers of Prince will continue to hold a leading place in the pr duction of good horses. Among mares with their foals there was also a lively competition. A curiosity in this class was the mare ol Mr. Thos. McBride, of Middleton, with her t vin foals at her side. Both foals are fine ones. They were sired by Gladstone and will make a pretty team.

CATTLE.

Only the more enthusiastic breeders of Prince County came out with their cattle. A. M. Wright, %sq., and Hon. Alex. Laird showed some very fine young stock, and carried away the bulk of the honors and the prizes. Messrs George Compton and I’. F. Holland exhibited splendid bulls, and Mr. Robert Glover's cows were justly admired: But, on the whole, the show of cattle was disappointing.

SHEEP.

Pens of fine bred downs were shown by Mr. Wm. Heffel, jr.of Travellers’ Rest, and by Mr. James Marchbanks, of New An nan ; Hon. Alex. Laird, Lot 25; Wm. Le- furgy, Lot 19; Richard Murray, St. Eleanors ; Herbert Mills, St. Eleanors ; Stewart Barns, Freetown; George F. Comp ton, St. Eleanors and John Hender- son, of Bedeque, distinguished themselves as bri eders of good sheep.

were poorly shown. In fact the show as a whole was notable for its want of unity of desigi. The horses were shown at the eourt!iouse,the cattle at the drillshed square,

with farm implements, pigs, carriages, poultry, apple stands and refreshment

booth, higglety pigglety—and none Ware shown to advantage.

IN THE DRILL SHED

the arrangement was much better. A fine display of cloths from the Tryon and Mill Valley Mills, adorned the centre space, and roots, vegetables, fruit, butter cheese, honey, grain, ete., was ranged round the sides. We regret that samples of the cloths of the Prince County Mills were not sent to Montreal, where they would have ranked well, and at all events have effectually rid the merchants of Montreal of the idea that we aro dependent npon them for clothes fit to wear. These mills should be well

tronized by our merchants and people. The roots shown were superior to any we have yet seen this year. There were splen- did specimens of potatoes, turnips, and

mangolds. The grains, too, were Grst- class : and tHe butter and cheese, of the

finest quality. Among the varieties were specimens of the real original sugar cane, standing about eight feet high. They were grown by Mr. J. W. Riley, of Summer- side.

The Exhibition was formally opened by the Leader of the Government, Hon. W. W. Sullivan, who made a short off-hand speech on the occasion. The ‘ exhibits” within the Drill Shed were very fine ; and we regret that want of space prevents a fuller description of them in these columns.

Supreme Court—-Prince County. James Larkin vs. Wim. C. Montgomery, Charles Bernard and John Patton, Trustees of the South Kildare School.—This case was called on Wednesday evening. The action is brought to recover damages because the de- fendants dismissed the plaintiff (who is a third ‘class school Teacher) from the South Kildare School. It appears that in July, 1879, the trustees eptered into an agreement with the plaintiff, under which he was engaged to teach that school for one school year,to end in the following June, subject, of course, ‘to the provisions of the Public Schools Act. This Act gives the trustees power, in case of a neglect of duty or immorality on the part of the teacher, to dismiss him, and under this

; authority, and after a gerat deal of wrangling,

they did dismiss him ; and on his persevering in going to the school the door was locked and the flue torn down, and or the 6th November last a new teacher was putin charge. This action was then commenced to recover dam- ages for the dismissal, the locking of the school door, the tearing down of the flue and the refusal or the _ trustees to give the plaintiff the necessary certificate to enable him to receive his Government sal- ary. The agreement above referred to is un- der seal, and the plaintiff, some few months after it was signed—without the consent of the trustees ind on his own authority—cor- rected a clerical error in it.

The declaration (which is the statement of the cause of action) contains two counts, the second one setting out in full the agreement at length notin its original but in its altered form. The plaintiti admitted making the alteration when giving his testimony and the Judge has directed a verdict to be found for the defend- ants on the second ccunt, and has reserved his decision as to whether or not the alteration had not the effect of avoiding the whole agree- ment. ‘he plaintiffs side was through at twelve o'clock Thursday, and a motion was then made by Mr. Hodgson, the defendant’s attorney for a non suit, on six grounds, Mr. Davies strongly opposed the application and the Judge reserved the points and directed the defendants to proceed with their defence. The case is a very mixed one, and will likely last over Friday, ;
