The Baptist Convention.
THE DELEGATES GATHERING AT BRIDGETOWN IN LARGE NUMBERS,
Brivcetown, N. S., Aug. 18,—The Bap- tists are gathering into this beautiful town. The governors of the college were in session this afternoon and continue to hold council this evening. The new seminary, a perfect gem of architecture, is to be handed over to the board of governors om the 25th inst. There will be airangements made to have a grand programme for the opening, which will be on or about Sept. 7th. Prof. C. A. McDonald, of the manual treining depart- ment, is at Wolfville preparing for the opening of the academy.
The ministerial institute was held this evening. Papers were presented by Rev. S. B. Kempton and I. E. Bill. Various aubjects were discussed. The convention proper dves not commence till the 20th inst,, but there are many matters which call for attention which will be noticed be- fore the formal opening.
Dr. F. L. Wilkins, of Chicago, secretary of the B. T. P. V., is here, and will present to-morrow evening the claims of the organ- ization upon the denominarion.
Extensive preparations have been made by the church here for the reception of lelegates, who are coming in with every train.
The W. M. A. society held a meeting this evening in the Jarge vestry of the church. Mrs. Manning presided.
A Brave Woman

Yesterday morning Mr. Jacob C. Brown,
carriage builder, of Northport, arose at 4 15 o'clock. He kindled the kitchen fire and then proceeded to the blacksmith shop, a short distance away, to put a shoe on a horse, leaving his family asleep. Return- ing in about half an hour, what was his horror at seeing smoke issuing from a win- dow upstairs over the kitchen in which five children were sleeping. He rushed to the window down stairs, in which his wife and youngest child were sleeping, and shouted to his wife to open the front door as the house was on fire, and he could not get at the kitchen on account of the flames. Mra. Brown, instead of opening the door, rushed through the burning kitchen, having presence of mind enough to shui all the doors after her, and ran up stairs to the room where her children were sleeping. Mr. Brown by this time had a ladder to the window and the mother passed her child- ren out one by one to the father, who de- posited them on the ground. After the last of the five, the eldest of which is eight years old, had been handed to their father, Mrs. Brown was so exhausted and choked with the smoke, on account of which, Mr. Brown says, he could not put his head in- side the window, that she could not have been able to get out without the assistance of Mr. Brown. After reaching the ground the first thought was for the infant she had left in the bedroom down stairs, and after this was out of danger she sank to the ground completely exhausted. Mr. Brown tried to get out some of the furniture bu’ the fire had got such head- way that nextto nothing was saved, the neighbors arriving too late to be of any as- sistance. The house was completely con- sumed but all the barns and outbuildings were untouched. None of the children’s clothing was saved and they were forced to go to the nearest neighbor’s house in their night clothes. The house was only partly insured.
The Bathing Costume.
People of refinement choose for their bathing costumes those which, while they are most comfortable and permit the great- est freedum of the body, are yet absolutely modest, writes Mrs. Mallon in a seasonable article on ‘*Seashore and Mountain Frocks,” in the August Ladies’ Home Journal. We read, and occasionally see very elaborate suits of white and pink, and those that are trimmed until they seem bet- ter suited for a Roman chariot race than a sea bath. However, very dark blue or black coarse serge, or fianne!, makes the most comfortable suit, and perfect modesty is achieved when this suit is in two pieces ; that is, the trousers which reach just below the knees, and the bodice, which comes up well about the throat, and has elbow sleeyes, are in combination, making one, while over this is worn the short skirt which fastens to buttons about the waist, the mode of attachment being hidden under a canvas belt. Long black wool stockings are in order, and if you are going to bathe much, and wish to keep them from wearing out, it will be wise to get them a size larger, and to insert in their feet the soles sold in the stores for knitted slippers. it is best to wear a rubber cap, and so protect one’s hair from the salt water, because this is cercain, in time, to injure it, though one often sees articles recommending the salt bath for the hair.

Water Supply of Liverpool.
A great feat of engineering has been per- formed for the purpose of supplying Liver- pool with water. The London Times says that the Corporation of Liverpool and their engineer have actually re-made a great lake —Vyrnwy in Mid Wales—which existed as a lake in the glacial epoch, but which, dur- ing the time cognisable by human record, has been a marshy valley, through which a tributary of the Severn slowly wound. A village, achurch, a burial ground and a pleasant country house had to be removed bodily ; a vast dam, unequalled in the world, had to be built, and the water had to be conveyed through pipes and storage tanks as far as Liverpool, across the Mersey and over seventy miles away. The work has been going on for eleven years. ‘t was in 1876 that the engineer, Mr. George F. Deacon, recommending the construction of a great dam, which would create a lake nearly five miles long, and drain some 23, - 000 acres, at a height of w little over 800 feet above the sea, the total cost of the undertaking being estimated at about four millions sterling. The dam was built of masonry the stune used being taken from a quarry close by. All the alluvial deposits was removed for then foundation, and there the huge stones were laid and cemented to the bed-rock; stones weighing two, four and sometimes even ten tons each were brought to their place by @ narrow gauge raiiway, and put in position by means of steam cranes. Major-General Sir Andrew Clarke, after a careful scientific inquiry, said that “nothing but an earthquake could possibly disturb tne dam.” Its iength is 1,172 feet; its thickness at the bese is 120 feet; its he'ght to the parapet of the viaduct, which serves as ® carriage road on the top, is 161 feet. The supply for Liverpool, according to the original plan; was to begin at 13,000,000 gallons a day, with a large power to increase. The lake will hold at least a thousand times that amount; but on the chance of there being at any time a temporary obstruction, the reservoir at Oswestry has been made to hold over 40,000,- 000 gallons and Prescott reservoir a very large store. The supply is therefore regarded as practically inexhaustible.
