The strikers at the Western Co operative Mine in West Belleville, Ill, set fire to the mine there on Monday night last, when unocenpied. The burning mine is one ot the largest in Belleville disrrict, and the loss by fire amounts to nearly $100,000. ‘

Tut preliminary proceedings in the extra- dition ease of the Frenchman Amireau, charged with the murder of Mrs. Carleton, at Watertown, Mass., began at. Digby, N. 3., on Wednesday Jast before His Honor Judge Jarary. Three witnesses frem Boston, among whom wis Detective James R Wood, appear- ed to give evidence as to the identitication of the prisoner. The Court Room was crowded when the proceedings were formally opened at 2.30 p. m. The prisoner appeared to be nervous and excited ; his eyes were wild and continuously roving around the room. The original depositions and warrant, and the certiticat s of de ositions, ssued by Judge E, T. Luce, of Middies:x County, Mass., were read.
