~vlncdlor Crabbe brought ap the matter of further amending the Act of Incorpora~ tioa by providing that West Kent »chool and the furniture cf the other schools for which the schoc] debentures were issued be vested in the City Council instead of in the School Board, and a bill in accordance therewith was introduced. In explanation of the proposed legislation Councillor Crabbe pointed out that the city has to pay the Scho] Board debenturea, and he therefore thought they should have the schoo) property as an asset. There were $17,500 of these debentures falling due this year, some $500 of which had already been
paid. He rrgretted to hear that the School Board did not take kindly to the prayosed legislation, and had actually
appointed a committee to memorialize the government in opposition to the City’s bil
Councillors Taylor and Forne also spoke in approval of the proposed Legislation, anc said they failed to understand how any body of men witha knowledge of all the facte conld oppose the measure.

For each infrse: ion of this by-law a fire of $20 or 38 dsy- imprisonment is provided. The by-law does not apply to persons selling meat by the querter on market square a= at pres- ent.
On the seoond reading. of the br-~-law, Councillor Leone protested against exact- ing @ license for selling salt meat in sniall j stores, pointing out that there wag many a poor woman who made her living in this way. He moved that the words ‘salt or corned” in the by-law be strack out, bat the motion dil notearry. The third read- ing of the by-law was set down for next meeting.
Councillor McCarren supported the con~ tention of Cenncillor Lyons regarding the snle of salt meats, and seconfied his mo- tion.
Councillor Crabbe also iutroduced a by-law amendiog the by-law relacing to theatres and #hews. The by-law provides that a veariy license mav at any time be granted the proprietor of any epera house, mosaic ball orother publie hall, the amount of said license to he fixed tv the Council The by-\aw was read a second time in ¢ mmittee, and set down for tiird reading at next meeting of Council.

—— = Ciry Cotrr.—The City Court was in ses sion this forenoon. The principal case was between E. BH. Norton and Austin S Hew- itt. Norten sued Hewitt for $23 30 which he claimed was due him for services as appraiser in connection with the recent fire
in the Hub Restaurant and for the prise ofa barrel of oyeters and a sat trap eold by him
to Hewitt. The defendant paid into Court thetum of $8.50, being the price of the goods sold and delivered, and $5 as cor pensation for Nerton’s services as apprais~ er. Several prominent insurance agents were examined and ali agreed that $5 was ample remuneration for the plain-~ iff’s services. Judgment was given for the ameouat paid into Court.
