A BSeasick-Proof Steamer.
We crossed from Calais to Dover in the new and elegant double steamer which has recently beon put-upon the line, built with the special object in view of preventing sea-sickness. This vessel has two separate hulls, with en- gines in each, which drive wheels in the centre, between the two hulls. The deck and cabins are large, and nearly 100 feet in width, so that 300 pass- engers on board, scattered over the the vessel, had plenty of room to sit or promenade, or lie down on the elegant sofas in the elegantly furnished cabins, as they might be inclined. They were not crowded together like sheep, as is generally the case on the little Channel steamers, and consequently there was, as far as we observed, not a single case of seasickness on board. The peculiar construction of this double steamer and its large proportions kept it very steady in the chopping seas of the Channel, and the passage was rather pleasant than otherwise. The time occupied in crossing to Dover was but eighty minutes, while ou the smaller and less powerful steamers it is seldom made in os than two hours. The pas- sengers are, however, made to pay heavily for the comfort, the fare for the trip between Paris and London by this route being £3, or $15. The time from city to city is reduced to ten hours, The fare is much lower by the other routes, which require more time, with less comfort. They are all, however, doing a heavy business during the Exposition, and round trip tickets by way of Dover and Calais cost about $24, good for five days. There are secend-class passen- gers taken for one-third less.— Letter to Baltimore American.

Look most to your spending. No matter what comes in, if more goes out you will always be poor. The artis not in making money but in keeping it; little expenses, like mice in a large barn, when they are many, make great waste. Hair by hair heads get bald; straw by straw the thatch goes off the cottage, and drop by drop the rain comes into the chamber. A barrel is soon empty if the tap leaks but a drop a minute. When you mean to save, begin with your mouth; many things pass down the red lane. In all other things keep within compass. Never stretch your legs farther than the blankets stretch, or you will soon be cold. In clothes choose suitable and lasting stuff, and not tawdry fineries. To be warm is the main thing, never mind the looks. A fool may make money, but it needs a wise man to spend it. Remember it is easier to build two chimneys than two keepone going. If you give all to back and board there is nothing left for the savings bank. Fare hard and work while you are young, and you will have a chance to rest when you are old.
