Many years ago the Duke of Montague was one night stopped by a highwayman at Finchley, and robbed of all he had about bim. Among the spoil waa an old family watch, which he much prized. He entreated the peas to return it to him, pleading the

True to his appoistment, he cam2; and the duke equally true to his word, at once paid him tne promised sum, This busi ness settled, the duke observed: ‘May I be allowed to ask how you could venture to place yourself in my power, with the gallows as your sure doom?” ‘‘Nay,’” replied the highwayman, “I knew that to be impossible; the Dake of Montague’s honor was my sure guarantee” On wishing him good morning, the duke, with his usual love of fun, asked him. to dine with him in the afternoon. The invitation was accepted, and a large party aeked to meet the man. Full of anecd te, and most polished in maaner, all were en- chanted with bim. When his “hour of busioeas arrived,’ he pleaded an engagement and withdrew. As soon as he was gone, fhe question at once arose: ‘Duke, who was that man—the most gentlemanlike and agreeable man we ever met?” “I am sure I don’ know,’ said the duke: ‘‘all 1 know of him is, that he stopped me on Finchley Common last night, and robbed me ot all I had about me.”’

There was avery stouc and haughty volunteer captain in the Southern army who had centrived to make himself hated by bis men, one of whom took occasion to revenge himself as follows: The captain, who was extremely vain of his appearance and horsemanship, dissatisfied with his own horse, secured a large, showy chestnut (the property of a baker in a neighboring town). which he rode for the first time on the oe- crsion of a graud review of the ar-ny by the commander-in-chief. His enemy heard of the transaction from the garrulous baker, and an inspiration came tc him Oa the day in question the soldiers were drawn up, the came came curvetting and caracolling down the line, his immense frame equeesed into the newest, tightest, most gurgeuus uniform that evera fieid offiser wore, con- scivus of the eyes of his chief, and rejoicing to run his course, when vut stepped his enemy and shouted ‘‘Bread !” with a voice like a bassoon. The horse stopped short so suddenly that the rider was sent spraw)- ing in the dust before his command, the most absurd figure in the world.
