Every day, now, there are new charges that Cabinet officers dismissed their clerks or other employes because of refusal to pay volitical assessinent, bunt any charge of the kind so far has been met with full denjal. So far as such dismissals might be a matter of principle, probably those who make the complaints would, under oppesite circum- stances, be at least as guilty as those of complaint is made. As a matter of pelicy I sheuld be astonished to knew that any person would autherize such dismissals at the time. It is announced, however, on authority which seems to be unquestion- able, that the President and his Cabinet will do all they can with propriety fer Re- publican successs, and that with this end in view, the patronage of all the Department will be used as has been customary.

* The man who is giving the New Yerk dectors all the trouble is one of their own, craft, altheugh, we believe, he is net ef what is called the reguiar school. Tanner is to-day on the seventeenth day of his fast. The general opinien of the medical fraternity was that he could net hold out beyond the fifteenth. That would be the fatal day. The despatches this morning anneunce that Tanner has in reality breken his fast so far aste take water in what may be regarded as considerable ef a quantity. He drank six eunces en Monday, and has ‘“munched’”’ broken ice. Up to that time he had not in reality taken any nourish- ment beyond what might be abserbed into his system by washing his bedy, er by the rinsing of his meuth. The water se used is weighed, beth before and after its use, and the loss by absorptisn is practically noted. We dont believe that there is any raud. Married Her Own Brother
A well dressed and handseme lady re- cently called upon Chief Judge Neilsen, of the Breoklyn City Court, end informed him that she had something of a strange and impertant character te communicate, ‘“‘T was born of respectable and wealthy parents in Sweden,” the lady said, ‘ an¢é came te this ceuntry with an aunt when but achild. In my yeuth | had a com- panien, a bey about two years my senior, whom | was taught te regard as an erphan adepted by my parents. His name was different from ours. My father died after I left heme and mother married again. Then the companion of my youth came te The meeting between us was most happy. and all the love and affection ef our childish days were renewed. Seme time after he secured a good *position,and we were married without the knowledge of our friends. Our married life was a mest happy one, and in due time a beautiful babe was bern te us. My mother came to America rather wnexpectedly, and called at the house. Upon being informed of my marriage and the yame ef my husband she expressed the utmost grief, and made the startling announcement that I had married my ewn brether.” Judge Neilson’s visiter was se overcome ip relating the stery that she sank back in her chair and sobbed for several minutes, She was informed by His Honer that in the sight of neither God nor man had she committed any crime. It was evidently the wish ef both, he said, that they shenld cease living as man and wife, and he weuld take the preper steps to have the marriage null and void. The lady left after thanking him in an earnest manner. The case was referred to counsel for settlement. The names of the parties are strenueusly withheld.

A very painful and at the same time curio3s accident occurred to Mr. Edward ©. Haviland, a traveller for Messrs. J. G. Mackenzie & Cv., Montreal, one evening last week. at Pembroke. it seems that Mr. Haviland accompanied a irienato a drug store for the purpose ef pro- curing seme nitric acid. The druggist filied a smail vial of tie liquid for the customer, and while passing it across the counter to him, the bottle expleded, as Mr. Haviland was standing near, the entire contents of the bottle struck him in the face and head. Fortunately his eyes escaped injury, but his face and forehead were badly burned. ‘The proper remedies were at once applied and the pain somewhat alleviated, but it will probably be some time before he recovers from the wounds inflicted, His hat and coat were eaten full of holes by the powerful stuff, and his general appearance en his arrival at Arnprior en Tuesday sug- gested the idea that he had been struck by sky reckets.
