It is hard to believe one man can write such conSist- ently great songs.0nce more, Jeff lynne has written all the songs on the new ELO disc, "A New World Re; cord", and this time he has come up with the best com— positions of his career.

As a result, "A New World

Record" is the greatest by far of all the ELO discs,

including "Ole ELO".

The nine cuts on this one are dominated by syn— thesizers, but those classic ELO melodies are not lost. "Telephone Line" is a good example. The precise harmonies. "Rockaria!" and "DoYa" are the out and out rock— ers of the album, off- set by the soft, melodic "Mission" and "Shangri— la". When I first listen— ed to "Shangri-la", the first verse reminded me of the Beatles. It really surprised me when part of the chorus went as follows!"

This album has every— thing any listener could want. There's great

rockers, beautiful bal— lads, a couple of close— ly controlled "space" numbers, and even a spectacular new single,

"Livin' Thing". Any— body who likes popular music should not be without "A New World Record." It deserves a gold medal. ’ ( * * * *) THE BEST

OF THE DOOBIE BROTHERS (WARNER BROS.)

One of the Doobie Brothers' albums was called "What Were once Habits Are Now Vices". It made reference to the fact that the Doobies were controlled by the Top 40, to the extent it became a vice on their musical creativity.‘ They broke

7 that vice with "Takin' It To The Streets", but this new musical direction has .yet to prove itself. Their best of album contains all those vice—like songs, along with "Takin' It To The Streets" and "It Keeps You Runnin'". At least the Doobies deserve a greatest hits package, more than I Can say about some of the others thatr are being released.

( * * ) FOREVER— JACKSON HAWKE ( COLUM: BIA RECORDS)

Jackson Hawke is Canadas latest "pop" group, making national hits out of "Into Thy Mystic", "You Can't

>Dance", and "She's The One". These songs im— mediately catch your attention,/but hold it for a very short time. They grow tiresome rather quick- ly. '

"Ain't No Cowboys" is' a patriotic tune about the U.S. influence in Canada.

*It is the strongest song plyrically on the album.
