slowly toward the mighty gorge. And as they spill over they fall slowly. muddy and dark.

But even in this springtime somhreness. there is still enough of the spectacle in the spill and the splash and the spray to bring out tourists by the thousands to watch in awe the wonder of nat- ure's creation.

- I stood this week with the rest in the spray of Niagara Falls and pondered upon a line written more than 300 years ago by John Milton on the wonder of nature in springtime. It went like this:

In those vernal seasons of the year. when the air is calm and pleasant. it were an ialury and

And as I pondered my mind raced back to other springs in other places across this broad country to recall for a moment the rejoicing of their sights and sounds.

The first to mind was boyhood on the Prairies with a springtime trip to the farm where behind the barn on an uncle's place near Boiiarm. sask.. I heard the first call of the meadow last and watched keen-eyed for the first adventuresome gopher'g hand to pop up from his winter hole along the pasture field.

It was there I learned to mimic the iark's call which I still ro- memher sounds something litre "l was here a year ago." I also snared my first gopher while the menfolk went about getting things ready for the first seeding of wheat.

The meadow lark still calls ex- actly the same from the prairie fencepost in April and the gopher has never teamed to evade the first snare of spring. And wheat- men everywhere across the vast plain between the lakes and the

Another. it was in the western mountains as the ice and snow began receding from their rocky peaks. There, the tiny streams gained momentum as they raceo down from the top and became torrents of run-off in the valley: below, washing across roadways. tearing out bridges and flooding rail and communication lines in one of the worst floods in British Columbia history. That was a spring with roar. But beyond the last coastal range all was quiet and peaceful along the roadside: of Vancouver Island where the daffodils waved in the soft breeze and the old ladies mended the rose treliises leading to their cot- tages.

This week along the Ontario peninsula leading to the falls. farmers are busy setting out new trees in straight lines close up against other lines of gnarled vet- erans which bore them last year's rich fruit crop. All along the route men are spraying and dig- ging and planting.

As Niagara Falls church slow and muddy the winter is washed away. And in the rainbow of the spray. even the murky apray. there is the promise el spring which is summer.
