Lecture at Emerald.

a large and intelligent audience assembled i: the B. 1. S. Hall at Emerald on the evening of the 6:h inst. to hear Mr. S. M Bent, of the Summerside Journal, deliver his highly interesting lecture on the great journslist and poet—John Boyle O'Reilly Dr. Wall, who presided, in a short and poiuied speech introduced the lecturer, who on coming forward was heartily cheer. ed. The lecture was well and carefully eritten, sia read in a very distinct and interesting manner. It would not take his listeners long to understand that he had given close and careful study te the subject of his lecture. He gave a minute cutline of his life, his editorial and literary work, and his pre eminence as the poet and friend of humanity.

After the lecture, a very amusing and entertaining musica! programme was given. Miss Blanche Craig presided at the organ, and in the rendition of her selections dis- played enviable qualities of taste, touch and time. She certainly made a very creditable debut. The vocal portion of the programme was excellently rendered. The choruses bo the Kinkora choir were good; the duet by D. A. and D. J. Cameron was heartily encored; whilst the humorous songs and witty remarks of W. F. Clarke relieved the entertainment of that gravity so notice- able on such occasions. At the close a

Evicted Tenants Commissien.

The Evicted Tenants Commission resumed its session on Wedneeday, Sir James Matthew presiding. Mr. Dillon made an earnest plea on beba!f of the re-instatement of evicted tenants and produced statistics showing a number of good settlements made through the plen of campaign between the landiords and their tenants. These settlements have been brought about through the good sense aud tke good feeling of the landlords and their tenants

Upon some of them a battle was fought for + time with that stubborness and that tenacity which characterized the people,

whether they be landlords or tenants or their allies on either side. Nevertheless, Dillon informed the commission, there were thousands of evicted tenants whose condition was so pitiable and desperate that it consti- cuted a menace to the public peace, and he urgently advised that measures be adopted for their relief, both on the ground of hu- manity and of public security. Mr. Dillon also spoke severely of those landlords who were apparently endeavoring to embarrass the government by their merciless evictions at this severe season.

James O Connor, a leading member of the Irish evicted tenants’ association, is re- ported as saying that they did not want to hamper Mr Gladstone or Mr. Morley im any way, but that they were determined to do all in their power to get the evicted tenants reinstated on their farms, Unless the land- lords wanted to see the agitation of the past twelve years recommenced and repeated, they would bring ab .ut a satisfactory settle- ment with theevicted tenants. The country, he said, was like a match, and there need- ed very little to set into a flame as big a land war aa there ever was before.

Mr. Di)lon stated that the total amount received from all sources for the support of the evicted tenants under the plan of cam- paign was £234,000,

UPON BOTH SEXES OF THE STUNDIST FAITH.

The Moscow correspondent of the Lon- ton Daily Chronicle describes at length the unsparing persccutions of the Stundists in Kicff. Similar persecution, he says, has been carried on in the provinces of western and southern Russia since 1875. Iwprison- ment, banishment, beatings, finings and outrages that he would have considered in- credible un!eas he had personally veritied each case, have been the lot of the wretched people. Ia one village of the Keperstini'z district the governor arrived early in Sep tember to enquire into the state of religion. He was assisted by lecal priests. Eventu- ally the officials compelled the Stundists to abandon their lands and shops, and to woik oa the communal lands during the day and do sentry duty in the village at night, so that they were hardly able to visit their homes at all.

Recently even women with nursing infante were compelled to assit in communal field work. The orthodox peasants superintended the others and inflicted with impunity al sorts of brutality on the Stundists whenever the latter lagged in the fields or fell asleep when on sentry duty. Although eventualls menaced by mobe the Stundists still rufused to embrace the orthodox religion. To make an example the villege elder one night sum- moned police and peasantry to his aid and took possession of « hut whose Stundish owner was absent on sentiy duty.

The party visited other houses where similar sceves were enacted. These horrible scenes were of nightly occurrence until all the Stundists were driven to seek refuge in the steppes. In his 15th year 216 were bred to him, producing 150 foals. Aman from Petamula came to Ariel Lathrop and wanted to sell him a fine! looking Nutwocd mare, Mr. Lathrop asked ifthe mare was registered. The man's reply staggered him: ‘‘No sir, I don’t beheve in this registration business. Canadian Wheat.

Canada’s wheat product is receiving a geod deal of attention in the British mar- kets at present. Comparisons made with the western American product, as against Manitoba’s wheat, are in favor of the lat- ter. To this end, Dunlop Bros., Glasgow, have issued a report which states that, | while Duluth and other spring wheats are rather dissppointing, Manitoba again comes to the front this season. This report con- tinuing, says Manitoba hes exported freely to the British market, and though the quantity has been large, the quality is not inferior, for Manitoba wheat is handsome, heavier, and every way much more attrac- tive than Mirnesota wheat. Manitoba's No. Shard wheat has become popular in the English and Scottish markets. Mani- toba wheat, Nos. 1 and 2 hard, finds a ready sale. The prices are as follows :— Quoting from yesterday's London transac- tions —~Manitobs, No. 1 hard, sold at thirty shillings, C. J. F., No. 2 winter, at twenty-eight shillings.
