Perfume.—Everybody remembers last Christmas season when Messrs. In View of the Plebiscite.

Winwstrac, May 10.—At the synod of Rupert’s Land on Saturday last, Archbishop McCrae stated distinctly that if the Go\- ernment ordered a plebiecite on tha prohi- bition question, that ke would vote against prohibition, He had, he said, come to the conclusion that while the Scriptures con— demn drunkenness in the most severe terms and make it a special sin, vet he regarded wine as a good giftof God and the verv emblem of joy. He velieved that prohibition cowld not be enacted, and that it was an interference with the rights of citizens. The proper course to pursue was, he said, for the Government to control the saloons,—indeed they might be remov- ed altogether. The motion against the plebiscite was carried by the Synod.

Loxpon, May 10.—An Atbens despatch states that there is so great a change in public sentiment that no cpposition whatever will ‘be provoked in respect to the decision to recall the army from Crete.

New Yorx, May 10.—A special despatch to the Sun from London, says that Lord Salisbury is said to Lave joined in a quarrel in the Prinee of Wales Household, by pro- testing against the action of the Princess in subscribing to the Chronicle fund for the relief of the Greek sick and wounded fund. This is an avowedly partizan move- ment and the action of one so nesr the throne is contrary to al] the precedents.

Loxponx, May 7.—The South African committee of the House of Commons which is enquiring into the Transvaal raid had another session to-day in the commit- tee room off Westminster Hall. The Duke of Abercorn, president of the chartered cowpany of Britith South Africa, was ex- amined. He said the board of directors of the company had no knowledge whatever of the raid before it occurred, nor suspi- cions of any intention upon the part of anyone to use the chartered company’s forces against the Transvaal.

Loxpoxy, May 7—A special despatch from Capetown says that the arniy reserve of the colony of Natal has been notified to hold itself in readiness for active service. The authorities of the Transvaal have iv- structed their field-cornets to thoroughly patrol the Nata! border and report in- ttantly any sucpicious movements. A circular from the j ransvaal has been dis- turbed in Cape Colony and in the Orange Free State calling upon the Afrikanders for help, saying : “We do not want your money nor moral support. We want you to come aod help us.”

Mount Forest, Ont., May 7.—A very sad and distressing sccident happened some niles from here in Proton township by which Mrs. Dean, a widow, met her death.
