NEARLY SurrocatEp.—The St. John Sun reports that atan early hour on Friday morning last, Mrs. Harry Rigby was awak- ened by a strong smell of gas in her home on Main street, Poftland. She called Mr. Rigby, and he in an instant saw that the house was filled with gas, and that the in- mates were in danger of being suffocated. The gas escaping fzom the main had found its way into the house by means of the waste pipe. A lady boarding in the house was found by Mr. Rigby to be unconscious, and Dr. March was sent for. On his arriv- al the physician proceeded to bring the lady to,and she soon regained consciousness. Mrs. Rigby was somewhat affected, but is all right now, as is also the other lady.

The Trouble Beginning.

In the French Senate, on Christmas Eve, Admiral Veron alluded to the regrettable effects of the Newfoundland law which pro- hibited the sale of cod bait to French tish- ermen. He complained that the British had erected factories for canning lobsters on the French shore, greatly to the preju- dice of French fishermen, and asked that the Government put a stop to these en- croachments on French rights. M. Goblet minister of foreign affairs, replied that the Government wanted to secure respects for the rights secured the French by the treaty of Utrecht. French fishermen did not now require Newfoundland bait. France only occupied one-fifth of the French shore where English industries had been estab- lished. They have been tolerated as long as they did not interfere with French rights. The Government would now, how- ever, cause their removal, and would at once open negotiations with England with: the object of suppressing the Englist. lobster factories complained of. He as- sured the Senate that the Government

FROM J. B. MACDONALD, DRY GOODS MEK- CHANT—A WOMAN ARRESTED, BUT AFTER- WARDS RELEASED.

On Monday night last, about ten o'clock, Mr. J. B. Macdonald, the well-known dry goods merchant on Queen Street, after totting up the day’ssales, laid the open cash box, containing $760, on the counter of the cashier's office in the centre of the store while he was lighting the gas, the electric light having gone out suddenly. After turning on and lighting the gas, which operation occupied over five minutes, he took up the cash box and placed it in the safe without suspecting that anything was wrong. Yesterday forenoon he again counted up the money preparatory to de- positing it in the bank, and discovered that he was just $401 short. He at once sus- pected a country-woman nawed Finch, who was in the store when the light went out so suddenly, as being the thief, and hid a warrant issued for her arrest. The war- raat was executed yesterday afternoon, but none of the money being found on her per- son or about the premises frequented by her, she was released.

Srr,—On reading your Souris Notes of thie ZUth inst,, especially the paragraph re- ferring to the shipments of produce, I was impelied to take a stroll round the wharves to see the “ twenty schooners loading,” the excitement of which any person might imagine. On my arrival at the scene it be- came quite evident to me that your corres- pondent had been misleading the public. The following schooners were either loading or ready for sea, viz. :—

On the whole I con- cluded that your comespondent had made a very small but malicious attempt to injure Mr. Sterns, who has been weil- known here for the past twenty-one years a3 one of the pluckiest and most enterpris- ing shippers.

It might be added that he is under no necessity of playing second fiddle to any person, but conducts his business ou his own resources.

What is Luck?

A philosophical definition of luck is given by an English writer as a capability of be- ing incapable. ‘* The first Rothschild was probably right, from his point of view, when he said that he never would employ an unlucky man.
