Surerpz.—M. E. Cousins, a young white girl of seventeen, residing at Chatham, Ont., married to a colored man, took a dose of strychnine on Friday night. She told Pr. Bray before she died that her reason for doing so was because her sister told lies about her, and that people twitted her on account ot marrying a colored man.

From THE Rockres.—A telegram was re- ceived on Wednesday by Mr. Gilbert Mur- doch, from Calgary, N. W. T., announcing the completion of the railroad and telegraph lines to that point. This is probably the first telegraphic message received in St. John from the foot of the Canadian Rockies.—St. John Telegraph.
Lost His Mo»ry.—A passenger from Mon- treal, by the Quebec express, on Thursday morning last, went to sleep on one of the benches in the gentlemen's waiting-room. Some time after a stranger entered and noticed the wallet hanging frem the sleeper’s pocket. He woke the man up, and, it is said that, on examination of his purse, the Montrealer dis- covered that he had been robbed of seventy-
five dollars.

Col. Herchmer at once placed himself at the head of twenty-one mounted lice and started for the scene, intending to ace Pie-a-pot to terms or to jail. he sight of the soldiers, however, had a very subduing effect for the indians at once succumbed and started for the reserve.

Tue St. John Dominion Exhibition entries of horses, cattle and sheep are being rapidly received at the office of the Secretary of the Advisory Board of this Island at Charlotte- town. The time for receiving those entries, as will be seen by the advertisement of the Secretary in another column, being limited, it is of the utmost importance to stockraisers to forward without any delay the entries of their animals within the time specified, in order that the committee of inspection ap- pointed by the Advisory Board may, with as little delay as possible, visit the different localities from which such entries may be re- ceived, and examine animals thus entered for the Dominion Exhibition opening at the City of St, John, N. B., on the Ist day of October, 1883.

Tue St. Vincent de Paul Nursery kept by J. G. Eckstadt, Eeq., in this city, was robbed by some miscreant of a number of plants to the value of thirty dollars or upwards on Satarday night last. Among those taken were six Roses, three Camellias, one Callor Lily, three Acacia Lepantos,one Gold Quartz,one Petunia and several other plants. All these were in pots, some of the plants being as large as three icet, so that they could not be carried off by a single person, Of all mean and despicable persons the one who would steal flowers is the worst, but when the proceeds of the sale of the flowers goes in part towards the relief of the poor, as it does from the St. Vincent Nursery. no words can be found strong euough to describe fittingly the person who would com- mitsucha robbery. We trust that any per- son who can find any clue to the robbery will give notice to Mr. Eckstadt.

Cricket,—The twelfth annual international match between Canada and United States commenced at Toronto, on the 15th inst. Lane, of the Marion Club, Philadelphia, and Bay, of the Whitby Club, captained their res- pective teams. Wickets were pitched
yunctually at ten o'clock, the Canadians, Roslen won the toss, going to the bat. Toey were in three hours, but only scored forty- three, the small score surprised their friends. It is attributed to the effect of funk, which seemed to take possession of the first men who faced the bowling, which was very effective, The fielding of the American team was about the best seen on the cricket grounds there, Aiter luncheon the Americans went to the bat, contributing the respectable score of 148. Theyer being the top scorer with twenty-nine. When the last man Lowry went in the score steod at ninety-eight. When the last wicket fell the score had been run up to 148. The following day the Canadians again went to the bat and were disposed of for forty-six runs, the Americans thus winning by an inning and forty-nine runs.

He towed it into Pictou where it became a nine days wonder, - The general conclusion arrived at was that it was the shark commonly known as the bottled nose or mack- erel shark, which is found very frequently in Northumberland straits, particularly in the vicinity of where there are shoals of mackerel,

Tre ‘‘Newfield is repairing the telegraph cable between Cape Breton and the Magdalen Islands, and also at theiBird Rocks, which, although a very strong and thick cable, was cot by the action of the sea on the sharp rocks. After attending to this service she will proceed to the lower part of the River St. Lawrence, to lay the cables on the north shore of the rivey, which will bean extension of Dr. Fortin’s scheme for procuring tele- graphic communication with the Strait of Belle Isle by the Labrador coast,
THe match on Victoria Park Grounds, Saturday afternoon, was a very pleasant one, The All-Comers, winning the toss, sent the representatives of Law and Medicine to the bat, whose wickets fell fast before the bowlin of V. Longworth and T. LePage. No stan of any consequence was made except by W. A. Weeks, who rapidly run up 23 runs. Law and Medicine were allout for 62. The field- ing and bow!ing of the All-Comers was ex- copenelly good, At the bat Finlay made best stand scoring 24 and not out. Others of the team also batted wel!. The match will be repeated Saturday next.

CURRENT NOTES.
The British House of Commons on the 17th adopted a clause in the Irish tramways bill devoting £00,000 of church surplus for migration in Ireland.
The North German Gazette denies that Bismarck has given an audience to Cardinal Howard at Kissingen; that the health of Bismarck does not permit him to receive even his closest political friends.
A mob of five hundred men attacked the Jewish quarters in Prague on Wednesday night. The rioters dispersed before they had done much harm. The frequency of the riots is causing much alarm among the authorities in Austria. The police and mil itary officers have been ordered to crush, with the utmost energy, every outbreak, however small. Forty of the populace and six police were wounded in the riot at Agramon on Tuesday. A mob subse- quently forced the jail and released the rioters.
A despatch to the London Standard from Namdinh says that Colonel Badens made a sortie on the 6th instant, supported by a gunboat. He proceeded northward and cutflanked and drove off the enemy. @n the 7th instant, with 1,200 men, he made a movement to the south @nd attacked the earthwork of the Annamites. The enemy made but a slight resistance, and abandoned the works in confusion. Their cannon wore hauled off by elephants. The loss of the French was two killed and six wounded. The enemy’s loss was heavy.
Mr. Dobson, chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, stated on the 17th in the British Commons that it was an understood fact that foot and mouth disease had been carried from England to America. He said that the Canadian cattle now suffering with disease at Bristol had been in contact at Liverpool with infected animals which came from Ireland. Hg pointed out, however, that the American quarantine system, in relation to diseases, gave no security against the conveyance of disease by men attached to quarantine stations and by articles taken out of quarantine yards. The system, he said, only tcok into consideration the ani- mals themselves.
