Interesting Letter From Mr, M. J McCarthy,

Mr. William Cantwell, of Charlottetown, has received an interesting letter from Mr M.J.McCarthy, of Svuris. The letter is dated Belment, Dec. 19th. Mr Cantwell has kindly permitied ue té make the fol- lowing extract :—

“Your kind favor of Nov. 12, I re- ceived yesterday, and was very glad to hear from you. I am writing with my back against a house which is per forated with holes fiom shrapnel srell fired by the British when they drove the Boers from Be!mont.

“We do outpost duty by cow panies in turn on Scoit’s Ridge amongst the bodies of dead Boers which are only partally covered with stones. Relecs of the figit are scattered about inthe shape of old hats, a boct , broken rifles, burst sheils,

etc. ‘*Belmon: is 740 wiles from Cape Town. Part of the journey we marched.

We did 36 wiles without a halt exceptiag to fllour water botties, our only rations being one bun, burnt on the outside and raw On tbe inside, But we are beiter fe} now.
