' Prowler has no legs, so of course he cannot sit up or stand up as Peter Rabbit does to look around. He has no wings, so of course he cannot ily and look down insearch oi his food. There is nothing for him to do but prowl around, hop- ing to find something to eat. Oi course he has to keep out oi sight as much as possible. Prowlers al- way do just this.

Long ago Prowler the Black- snake 'learncd that one of the surest ways of getting a dinner is to find the home of someone with babies small enough (or him to swallow them. That sounds dreadlul, doesn't it? But when you think of it, it really is no worse than other forms of hunt- ing. In season Prowler is very fond oi the eggs of feathered folk. of course, they have to be small enough ior him to swallow them. He isn't big enough to swallow the egg of a Hen of a Duck. He has cousins who are big enough to do that. So Prowler spends a great deal of time prowling about look- ing for the nests of his feathered neighbors. Long experience has taught him where to look for nests. He knows that some of the Sparrow folk nest on the ground. So do Carol the Meadow Lark, and Bubbling Bob the Bobolink, and Bob White, and Hermit the Thrush, and Teeter the Spotted Sandpiper and others.

He knows that other feathered folk build their nests in bushes, and low down trees. He knows too. that some build higher up in trees and way out on the tips oi the branches. And he knows that sev- eral make their nests in holes in trees. So. much of his time in the early spring and summer is spent prowling about looking for nests. He is a very good climber. It is no trick at all ior him to climb about in bushes, and he doesn't hesitate to climb high in trees. lie is just as well pleased if he finds young Birds in a nest instead of I cggs. He is fond of young Birds for dinner, Just as human folks are

He was found many a good meal there. Oi course he did his best to keep out of sight of any watchful eyes that might be near. He moved slowly through the tall grass. Now and then he raised his head for a quick look this way and that. It was when he was do- ing this that he saw Mrs. Rattles the Kingfisher coming straight to- ward the bank where he was. He didn't move. Because he didn't move, shs dldnlt see him. She was flying low and she did not rise to come up over the bank to the big hickory tree growing there. She just disappeared. Yes, sir, she just disappeared.

Quietly, Prowler crept to the edge of the bank and looked down. She wasn't to be seen. He knew then what had happened. He knew what she had done. t

”She had a nest in this bank," thought Prowler. "That means eggs, or babies, and I really dont care which. I hope she has not dug that hole where I cannot get to it."

He lay in the grass close to the edge of the bank and kept quiet. He knew that, sooner or later, Mrs. Rattles would come out again, or perhaps Rattles himseli would visit the nest. In either case, he would be able to find the entrance to the long tunnel in the bank. It would be just it matter of patience, and Prowler had plenty of that.
