Mr. Tarte made one little mistake when | he made that impulsive and frank state- ment in the House of Commons about the purchase of La Patrie,

Mr. Greenshbields’ statement is an ever so much better explanation than Mr. Tarte’s and if it does not quite agree with his client’s, why itis not the first time that

Mr. Tarte’s explanation, according to Hansard, was ag follows:

“Mr. Greenshields had a cheque in bis hands notof his own money, bvt of the money of the party, and he paid that che-

que.” Mr. Greenshields’ explanation is that Mr. Tarte gave him $5000 in cash that

afternoon (i. e., the afternoon when the paper was purchased), and that the following morning Mr. Tarte’s sons gave him $5000 in bills and a cheqne for 10,- 000 on the Hochelaga Bank.

Mr. Tarte says the morey came from Mr. Greenshields’ ; Mr. Greenshields says the money came from the Messrs. Tarte.

No doubt the honorable gentleman and the learned gentleman are both telling the truth, but nothing less than an impartial and unbiased Parliamentary investigation like that now going on could make the affair intelligible to the public mind.

How both these gentlemen must have wondered where that money came from when they came to compare notes !
