lnternationol fey ' topics proves to be a great Hit

it was diplomacy at centre ice on Monday evening, Nov. 8, as a capacity crowd of over 2,000 filled the Charlottetown Forum to witness an historic event - an exhibition hockey ' game between the UPEl Panthers and the People'sRepublic of China National Team. And the game was a thriller with Panthers’ Bobby Hicks scoring a goal that tied the game 4:4 in the last 13 seconds of play.

The events began with a pre-game ceremony at centér ice. and the crowd was quiet as they got their first glimpse of the Chinese Nationals, reputed to be agile, fast skaters and top athletes. Team members skated on ice wearing the orange-red uniforms emblazoned with the team name in white Chinese characters on the front and their name and numbers on the back in English. The team stood tall, as tall as , or taller than, the Panthers, and of a similar build.

After the playing of the national anthems of Canada and the Peoples Republic of China, there were words of welcome from Wayne MacDougall, President-of the PElHA, and from UPEl Professor Robert Suen, who greeted the visiting team in Chinese. Then came three ceremonial face-offs with Premier Jim Lee, Charlottetow'n,Mayor Frank Moran, and UPEl President Dr. Peter Meincke dropping the pocks for the two team Captains. _

And then it was down to business. The game was fast and skilled, and played to an appreciative crowd. The Chinese impressed the crowd with their organization and systematic passing. I hey got ott to a test start, scoring three goals on the Panthers in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Panthers quickly gained momentum, however, and treated the crowd to a good game.

After the game the Panthers were host to the Chinese team and officials at a reception and dinner at the MacLaughlan's I Motel in Charlottetown. Both the Canadian and Chinese ‘ hockey players were high-spirited and enthusiastic about

., the game and their new acquaintances... and language

proved to be no obstacle. During the evening the Canadians and the Chinese exchanged gifts as an expression of good- will. .

Panthers’ Coach Jack Hynes noted , at the after<game celebration, that he had told the Panthers to “ play as you have never played before... because this is a game and a night you will remember forever. “ ,
