The scber, in- dustrious man in this Province must suc- ceed, and no class mere certainly than the farmer ; and the merehant can trust such men with goods untii the harvest returns enable him to pay.

and to the drunken spendthrift we owe com- mercial prosperity,our city and our Province is, indeed, in a sorry condition. It may take a short time to force upon unwilling minds the fact that the crowd round a tavern door does not indicate business activity, and that the needy inebriate is not the best customer; but as trade really rests on the sound basis of demand and supply, the utter falsity of such reasonings will be apparent to the most simple minded.
We donot here touch upon the moral aspect of this law, and the incalculable blessings it brings with it. But there is ne more beautiful sight than honest temperate fndustry; no home life purer and nobler
than that which has its reverenee centred in | the husband and father, whose life is un-

Whatever may be the general verdict in regard to the Exhibition just closed, our neighbors frem Prince Edward Island have no reason to be otherwise than proud of the result, so far as they are eoncerned. Their Stock exhibit was undonbtedly a splendid one, and the fact that the Govern- ment Stock Farm sueceeded in taking no less than twenty-five prizes—one-haif of them firet prizes—aggregating over $460, speaks well for that institution. A few years ago the Prince Edward Island Stock Farm was certainly not as well managed as it is to-day, and the marked improvement in its steck as well as its more eftieient and
economical management, shows that a Government Stock Farm is not incapab.e of improvement, and when properly controlled, can be made of great service to a country.
The Island was alse fortunate in its repre- sentatives at the Exhibition. Hon. Mr. Ferguson, though comperatively a young man, is uadoubtedly one of the ablest public men in the province, and being moreover an enthusiastic agriculturist was able to render his Provines im matters per-

A New Lient.—The Agent of Marine and Fisheries, A. Lord, Esq., has been making himself useful in this direction lately. It is said he intends having the Kast Point Lighthouse painted and repaired this fall. Ayred pane of glass was plaeed by him in the Souris Lighthouse on the 28th ult.,which will serve as a Range Light to those seeking shelter at the Souris Breakwater. The shipping at this port is largely on the inerease, and bids fair to lival some of the older western towns The great advantage of having & range light in connection with our Breakwater will be readily recognized by fishermen and sea faring men generally. Mr. Lord, by his energy and intelligence, has already proved himself to be the right man in the right place.

In relinquishing his practice Mr. Blake has simply performed his duty te his party, aud itis the height of absurdity to claim unusual credit for Mr. Blake because of this action as some of the Liberal news- papers are now doing. Every man who enters public life, if he performs his duty, must necessarily sacrifice his business pros- pects and opportunities, and no leader of a party can find time to pursue a business avocation conjoixt'y with the discharge of his political duties. When Sir John Mac- donald fentered public life he voluntarily abandoned the fame and fertune whieh were within his grasp as a lawyer, and he has chosen for thirty years to sacrifice his aaterial welfare to the serviee of his coun- cy. And Mr. {Blake, in abandoning the praatice of his profe:sion, is simply taking the course which the responsibiities of leadership impose en him.
