Among the candidates for the postofiice at Media, Pa., is Miss Hattie Gault, who was a teacher of Mrs. McKinley when the latter was a student at Brooke Hall sem- inary, in Media, more than 30 years ago.

Frances E. Brant left her school in Ohio 12 years ago and invested the money she had earned as a teacher in a Kansas farm. Today she owns 2,500 acres of good land. For six years she has been a _ preacher and for two years the pastor of the Universal- ist church at Hutchinson, Kan.

Miss Emily Race Briggs, daughter of Professor Charles A. Priggs of ‘‘higher criticism’’ fame, has won the second place of honor in the graduating class of Union Theological seminary, New York city. She will be the first woman to graduate from a Presbyterian theological! seminary.

Mile. Clemence Reyer, who first trans- lated Darwin's works into French and has written several metaphysical books, was taken from tae Galignani Home For Des- titute Authors on her seventieth birthdhy and treated to a dinner at the Grand hotel by a number of French and foreign scien- tific »nen.

Mrs. Josephine R. Nichols, who had charge of the Woman's Christian Temper- anee union exhibit and headquarters at the Paris exposition and also at the World’s fair, has just died at her home in Indian- apolis, She was a strong woman, and a great help tothe organization to which she had given all her time.

Mrs. Josephine Shaw Lowell is one of the pioneers in prison reform work. As an expert in household eccnomics she has been an educator of the women of her age and country, and as member of the New York board of charities she has been influ- ential for reform, stimulating other work- ers, each in her special task.

RECENT INVENTIONS.

A new adjustable car step is thrown out in position for use, or back under the car, by turning a lever on the car platform.

A novel design for use as an ink eraser, pencil sharpener and burnisher is arrow shaped, the head being sharpened on all its edges.
