Literary conference

U.P.E.L. will be hosting the 13th annual Atlantic University Undergraduate English Conference on February 5, 6, & 7th. Representatives from thirteen Atlantic region universities will be attending, including students from three cam- puses of the University of Maine. . This conference originated to provide stu- dents with an arena to present papers in various creative and critical areas. The Process of pre- senting to peers also improves public speaking skills. As well, the conference provides an excellent opportunity for social interaction with contemporaries from other universities, U.P.E.I. hosted the A.U.U.E.C. in 1985 and there were fifteen papers presented. Now in 1993 there are sixty-four presenters. It is an honour to be

chosen to present and the competition is stiff. .

Friday, February Sth, following registration, there is a poetry reading in the Faculty lounge and refreshments will be served. Saturday, Feb- Tuary 6th, there are twenty sessions in Main building. Each of the twenty sessions consists

of three speakers. After all three people in the session present, the floor is opened for a ques- tion period. Although Saturday is jam-packed with literary analysis, poetry and fiction readings,there is still a great deal of time for socializing.

Saturday evening is the English Society Pub featuring MIKE O’CONNOR. There will bea cover charge of $2.00 at the door and low beer specials all evening.

Sunday, February 7th, are the final sessions and closing addresses. The English department has decided not to charge an admission fee to observers for the Saturday and Sunday ses- sions; however, there will be a donation box and observers are expected to pay for coffee and snacks.

When the schedule of readings is completed it will be posted on the English Society bulletin board on first floor Main. All who wish to observe Saturday’s and Sunday’s sessions are welcome to drop in!

Student exchange programs

Time is running out. The deadline for Student Exchange Program applications is Friday, Feb- ruary 19. The applications do take some time and effort on your part, so get to work on yours now. If you don’t have an application form, I’1l be happy to give you one and answer any questions you may have.

For those of you who are unaware of what an exchange program involves, here is a brief summary of the details.

1. Exchange students earn credits towards their U.P.E.I. degrees while studying abroad.

2. Any student in first or second year with a minimum average of 70% in five courses is eligible to apply.

3. Those eligible may select to participate at one of the following locations: Eastern New Mexico University, Deakin University (Aus- tralia), Dundee University (Scotland), Muskingum College (Ohio) and possibly, the

University of South Florida.

4. Students pay regular U.P.E.L. tuition and similar U.P.E.I. residence fees.

5. Student loans, scholarships and bursaries may be utilized to help finance your expenses.

We will be holding a meeting Wednesday, February 3 in the Home Economics Lounge in Dalton Hall at 6:30 p.m.. We will be discussing Some activities for the upcoming semester. All international students and friends welcome.
