A Frencu Canadian paper, said to be the mouthpiece of Senator Hector Fabre, is of opinion that ‘‘a general convention of Liberals, say at Montreal or Ottawa, would be of vast benefit to the party just now. Our ranks need solidifying ; we want a lit- tle more homogenity before entering on the general engagement next year.”

Drernerta.—The Moncton Times reports that diptheria is making sad havoc among the French of Kent Co., N. B. Upwards of sixty cases have resulted fatally in the parishes of Richibucto and Wellington. E ght children (all French) were buried at the Roman Catholic Chapel grounds in ten days, and one famély lost three children be- tyeenthe hours of eight and twelve on Sunday night last.

Fire.—On the mornirg of the 6th, the house owned by Graham and Newlands, buillers, and occupied by Leaard Ferrar, asabaker, on Brunswick staeet, Halifax, was distroyed on fire.» The fatter lost his stock. valued from $300 to $400, on which their was no insurance. A stable in the rear was also burned with a house. The buildings were insured.

Faun or a Larce Buriprva.—In St. John, on Thursday last, the double four- story brick building, almost finished, belong- ing to the estate of the late J. M. Walker; situated on Prince Willirm Street, fell,tear- ing away a portion of the building adjoin- ing, owned by Messrs. McMillan. Loss fully fifteen thousand, it is thought. J. & V..C. Spears, of New York, the contrac- tors, will be the losers, One boy was hurt. Eight men who were working on the Wal- ker:building, successfully escaped.

Enruvustastic Recertion.—The Rev. G, M. Grant, the Principal elect of Queen’s College, arrived on Friday afternoon. He Was accorded a most cuthusiastic greeting at the station by the Professors and students of Arts and Medical Colleges. The students march: to the depot, headed by the ‘* A” Battery band. Another Turkish Victory | Reported.

It is reported that Turkey will treat sep- arately with Russia, should Erzeroume be taken and the road to Adrianople threat- ened.

lt is thought that the Porte will cede a free passage of the Bosphorous rather than permit an advance on Constantinople.

A part of the Russian Baltic fleet have sailed for the Mediterranean.

it is reported, and beiieved to be correct, that Suleiman Pasha has gained another victory between Elena and Tirnova.

The Grand Vizier has resigned ; but the Sultan has refused to accept his resignation.

Russian outrages are reported from Kas- entek.

Mucklar Pasha’s army now numbers 25,- 000, and remforcements are being sent to him.

The Czar’s melancholy is increasing, and he will immediately return to St. Peters- burg, unless the reserves at Elena and Yopkai lead to future success.

Indignation Meeting at Brookfield.

AccorDING to announcement, an indigna- tion meeting was held at Brookfield Hall on the evening of Thurrday last. We learn that avery strong resolution condemnatory of the Government was passed. Brookfield used to be a stronghold of Mr. L. H. Davies and his followers. Their Acts, of one short year have, however, pretty thoroughly opened the eyes of the people to the fact that they are ‘‘ Nor THE MEN” to adminis- ter our public affairs.

—A job to coax bachelors out of single blessedness, and to decrease the stock of old maids by an increased demand for wives may be involved in some statements made by the ‘* London Review” in regard to the relations existing between marriage and longevity. Old maids and bachelors, it says, rarely attain to extreme old age, and

ary ages by wedding a dozen times or 480, while Jacob Jay of Bordeau died in 1772, at the age of 100 years, having laid seventeen wives in the grave, and Margaret McDow- all, a Scotch-woman, died in 1765 at the age of 105, having wept at the untimely de- mise of thirveen men whose names she had borne in rotation. Thus far the ‘‘ Review” does not put a very extraordinary tax upon one’s capacity for bolting a tough morsel, but the strain is rather severe when it goes on to speak of a pair named Rovin, who died in Hungary in 1741, the man aged 170 and the woman 164, leaving a tender youth 116 years old to bewail his orphanage, and reflect on the strength of that tie which held his parents together for 148 years.

Michael Clinton, drunk and incapable, was fined $3 or 14 days. Edward Morris, drunk and incap- able, was fined $1 or four days. Daniel Con- ley and Edward Dooley, drunk and, on com- plaint of Willliam Hennessy, was fined $2 or eight days. George Tait and Andrew Mc- Coubrey, were each fined $2 and costs for fighting on the street. complaint of R. Crabbe, trial to stand over till Monday. Francis McRory, on complaint of B. Ruth Cairns, for nuisance, stands over till Monday.
