CANADIAN, BRrockvILte, Ont., July 28.
About 3 p.m, on Saturday a_ terrible thunder storm passed over this place, and hailstones as large as marbles fell; the lightning was severe. The wife and child of George Hutton, boat builder, who were on the American shore opposite here, took refuge under a tree. The child was killed in its mother’s arms, and Mrs. Hutton was fatally injured. She appears to be paralyzed and unconscious. It is reported that a man named Lorocque was also struck on one of the islands up the river.
SHAKESPEARE, Ont., July 28,
About 8 o'clock on Saturday evening, whilst two young men, sons of Messrs. W. Lingleback and N. Switzer, farmers, living in this vicinity, were bathing in the River Nith, they get beyond their depth, and one trying apparently to rescue the other, both were drowned. The bodies were not recovered nntil two hours afterwards.

The fiood was a great benefit hereabouts; 16,000,000 bushels of coal had been await- ing shipment, and there was a coal famine at the lower river towns. Steamboats with 500 barges, containing 8,000,000 bush. of coke and coal, were released.
Artanta, Ga., July 28.
Six miies from here last night, Martin De Four and his wife, both near 80, were brutally murdered while in bed asleep—-both were cut with an axein the neck. They were quiet, peaceable people, not having an enemy, as far as known in the community. Every effort is being made to discover the murderers.

Mrs. Adam Holmes, of Port Huron, Michigan, was fatally shot on Thursday night by her husband, who mistook her for a burglar.
A Petersburg despatch says : ‘*The corn and tobacco crop of this section, which at one time promised a total failure from the drought prevailing for three months, has been greatly refreshed by copious showers.

Thirteen cases in all were aie ted to the Board of Health to-day; one additional death oecured this afternoon. A careful revision of reports from all. undertakers found that of 71 deaths reported for the week but 34 died of yellow fever; they have therefore concluded not to declare the dis- ease an epidemic.
Lowuisvitte, Ky., July 27.
There are now four cases of. yellow fever at the hospital, Mr. Paradis, Mrs, Pomery and daughter, of Memphis, and Charles Hunter, of Mississippi. Quarantine has been established at Guthrie, Ky.
Savannan, Ga., July 27.
For the week ending last night only three deaths amongst the whites, one an infant; total 10 —not one from fevers of any ‘kind. The city is very healthy.

3oard of Health to-day, and nine deaths from yellow fever ‘have occurred since last night.

The following cable message has been re- ceived by the Peruvian Minister in this Country from the Peruvian Minister of Foreign affairs, Senor Irigoyen, in Lima via Panama: ‘‘Huascar entered and blockaded the port of Iquique, fought the Chilian squadron for two hours, leaving hors @ combat the Consive and Absao. The Huasear was unhurt.

Despatches confirm the reported fire in Kremlin, at Moscow, destroying the theatre. The staircase was fired, as is supposed, by Nihilists in the middle of the day... It had previously been saturated with petrolenm ; damage considerable.

In consequence of the ravages of phyl- loxera in the French viney ards, the Minis- ter of Agriculture has fpr omised, as soon as the Government Commission has reported on the planting of American vines, he will give immediate effect to its decision.
The harvest in the southeast of France is nearly terminated, and in the southwest is half finished. The quality is better than last year, but the quantity falls short, being "| barely an average.

The Beef Contract
To the Editor of the Examiner.
Sir,—As my name has been introduced into the discussion of the Meat Contract for the Asylum it becomes necessary to tell the public, through you, what I personally happen to know in the matter, and being Mr. Bridges’ accountant I am in a position to know pretty well what the contracts for the past year were and how they were per- formed.
My name was first introduced on account of making arrangements with you to insert Mr. Bridges’ letter, asking of Mr. Ferguson an explanation for his unfairly awarding the meat contract to Blake Bros. Your calling to explain why it was not to appear at the stipulated time, as Mr. Ferguson was to see Mr. Bridges and have the mat- ter amicably settled, 1 looked upon as an honest effort to have a disagreeable affair settied so far as you Were concerned, though I looked on the “ransaction itself a trick clumsily performed.
I saw Mr. Ferguson who told me that the tender of Blake Bros. caused him to make enquiries into the merits of the meat supplied to the Asylum last year, and found that the meat supplied to the Poor House was bad.
T asked who said so? He said, after some hesitation and conversation with the deputy, that Rev. George Hodgson had said so. What did he say was the matter? He had not conversed with him about it.
What did Sergt. Allan say? He had not seen him.
I reminded him that it was the Asylum tender that was under consideration. Had Mr. Waller complained ?
After conversing with the deputy he admitted that Mr. Waller, who took deliv- ery of the meat, was never better satisfied in his life with the fulfilment of a contract, but the Doctor had pronounced the meat in- ferior.
Inferior to what?
Well, to what they Blake.
Had he asked the Doctor in what par- ticular way the meat was defective?
Well, he did not say that he had of had not. but seemed to chink that I ought to be’ about satisfied with the information L had received,
On whose testimony was our tender re- jected? Was it on that of Dr. Blanchard, Rev. G..W. Hodgson or Blake Brothers ?
He wished to know what difference that made as it was rejected.
I answered that it was a-case of direct

sponsible, and left with the impression that Blake Brothers were the only parties whe had given, him any direct information, yet he did not know how or why they should know any more about the beef than him- self.
It was not necessary to see Mr. Waller, as he had alrealy given a certificate of the quality of the meat, so I callel on Sergt. Allan and handed him a written request from Mr. Bridges for a certificate of the quality of the meat furnished last year. Well, he talked a long time without giving rauch information as to his intentions. Would give no wriiten certificate, as the Government might make that an excise for superseding him. Denied ever making any complaints to the Commissioners of the Poor House er being asked any questions by them in reference to the matter. I was introduced to the cook who accused a pauper named Bolt of complaining, but as he in-. variably did so there was not much import- ance attached to his word.
I was subsequently present at an inter- view with Mr. Allen when Rev. G. W. Hedgson and Mr. Bridges called to ask an explanation for his endorsing the complaints of the pauper, and denying to me that he was instrumental in making any complaints whatever, but he had no excuse ready at that'time. He did not appear te be aware that “there was anything wrong with the meat when inspected, or even when the bills were certified for payment. Probably the reforms contemplated ‘by Mr. Ferguson enlightened him a little.
In conclusion, [ feel beund, in justice to the public, ss well as to Mr. Bridges, to say that Sergt. Allen and Mr. Waller were at all times at liberty to select from the meat offered to the public within the City Market or in the store on Hillsboro’ street, and were never refused anything so selected.
A large portion of the meat was furnished from the market, and weighed by Mr. Lewis, Market Clerk, ‘who can, “if necessary, give impartial testimony.
The accounts were certified and paid in the usual way, without note or comment, and that no complaint, whatever, regarding the quality of the meat had reached us until I personally challenged Mr. Ferguson to make one.
