They abound as plentifully as our own currency. There is a discount of from one to two per cent. on them at the Banks, but in gen. eral‘ trade, except among very particular people, they pass at their face. Mr. Bencoven, e2rtoonist of Grip, will deliver a comic Lecture in this city on the 16th inst. A correspondent of the Truro Sun says of his ecent lecture in Pictou :—

Monday evening, Prince Street Hall was crowded with a very fashionable audience, to hear Mr. Bengough’s lecture on ‘ Pic torial Pleasantries.’ During the evening Mr. Bengough cartooned many of the most prominent public men of the Domin-« ion, including Hon. Alex. McKenzie, Sir John A, MeDonald, and Dr. Tupper, tho:e of our prominent citizens being par- ticularly good, noticeably those of our Stipendiary Meg’-trate, Prothonotary and Sheriff. His ab ity as a cartoonist was, shown when he transformed his school and pupils into the Premier and Sir Jobn A. tlis sayings were very humorous, and he keptthe audience in a continuous roar of laughter, boisterous at times, when the ce of some prominent citizen appeared

Since the recent enormous destruction of capital by the strikers and rioters, a question of vast imporiance is frequently asked—Where shall our workmen go? In many places—as in Pittsburg, there are hundreds of unemployed men to every chance of employment. Itis a pity’that many leave the country and crowd into the cities and manufacturing towns. No pur- suit appears just now as safe, proiitable and reliable as that of agricu‘t ive; ticie

fore, it seems expedient thit all aue ins fluence should be used to make those who can by any means do so, betake themselves to rural districts and so aid practically in easing the burden of anxiety under which all patriots are groaning.

Would America be recognizible without the black race? Talk of emigration to Africa grows stronger and louder each month. No especial movement has been made in the district of Columbia (where about half the inbabitants are colored), but in South Carolina and other of the South- ern States, the scheme is slowly but surely moving on. ‘The white citizeas have very generally discouraged the idea, on the grounds that the interests of the country require the labor of the colored race, and that in losing it we should lose a very val. uable class of workmen. The blacks, superstitious from time immemorial, be- lieve that, because the whites look upon the project with disfavor, they have some sinister design in view to the detriment of their race, and it is impossible to disabuse their minds of the imjreesion. ‘herefore the efforts are redoubled to influence the movement favorably. The Charleston Courier says: ‘It seems that some pros minent black men, who have hitherto not concerned themse!ves much in the matter, are now openly advocating the scheme as, what they declare, a measure of relief for the race. It is hardiy possible to go into a small shop, kept exclusively by black men, without hearing the sound of the molasses tree spoken of in terms of the wildest infatuation, Here and there a thoughtful black man is found, who has considered the exodus and opposes it, and in consequence has ‘‘a very hard road to travel with his people.’’ Whatever it may all amount to, it is considered of suf- ficient importance for thinking men to give it some attention, and they express themselves on the subject as being ot the
