Hello again. Financial aid is a personal matter and will mean different things to different peo- ple. Please take your definition and any concerns to me for finan- cial aid. I am available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 1:30 and 4:30. For most of you we will discuss bursaries, scholar- ships, and loan/bursary appeals, but others of you will be inter- ested in budgeting, or in gen- eral questions of graduate school monies.

Some awards that are based on need, or merit, or both are coming up in February under File # 60 of the Undergraduate files. Each and everyone of you is el- igible. Also, there is one for Catholic females with a deadline of January 31.

The big news this week is the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program. It is “$4000” big and will require a bit of your time in the next two weeks. This is a national program to encour- age a first degree, but your ap- plication is first reviewed by a lo- cal committee here on campus. I am available to answer any ques- tions on this, and to help you sub- mit the best application possible. This is not the time to be overly modest.

Terry Fox Conditions

Background.

When Terry Fox took his Marathon of Hope halfway across Canada in the summer of 1980, his courageous run, combin- ing both outstanding athletic achievement and high humanitar- ian ideals, stirred the pride and compassion of Canadians every- where.

Although he was unable to complete his cross country jour- ney. ‘Terry Fox was successful in raising more than $20 million for the cause of cancer research, emerging as a true Canadian folk hero in the process.

Invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1981 at the age of 22, the youngest Cana- dian to have received this hon- our, the late, one legged runner has become a symbol for extraor- dinary accomplishment and hu-

manitarian excellence and an in- °

spiration to Canadians of all ages.

Although his marathon has ended, Terry Fox’s hope lives on

with the memory of his valiant effort. In recognition of this great Canadian, the Government of Canada, under the aegis of Fit- ness and Amateur Sport, has cre- ated the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program.

Program Objective

In keeping with the spirit of his achievements, the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Pro- gram is intended to encourage Canadian youth to seek the high ideals represented by Terry Fox by the granting of commemora- tive scholarships for the pursuit of higher education.

Program Administra- tion

The Government of Canada has provided an initial $5 mil- lion endowment fund for this pur- pose. The fund is held in trust and administered by a corpora- tion headed by a Board of Direc- tors. This Board consists of out- standing and qualified Canadians from various segments of society.

All scholarships and adminis- trative costs are to be met from the interest resulting from invest- ment of this initial $5 million Government of Canada endow- ment.

Scholarship Value

The Terry Fox Scholarship is a renewable. award, subject to sat- isfactory progress and is tenable at any canadian university or col- lege. The value of each award is $4000 annually, for a maximum of four year or until a first de- gree is obtained. For candidates attending an educational institu- tion in provinces where no tuition fee is applicable, the award value is $2500.

Eligibility

The awards will be of partic- ular interest to graduating sec- ondary level students and those currently studying towards a first degree or diploma in a Canadian university or college. Scholarship candidates must be Canadian cit- izens or have landed immigrant status.

As many Scholarships will be granted each year as the number creditable candidates who apply, with the total number awarded each year limited by the inter- est from the investment of the $5 million endowment. The field of study is open and at the discre- tion of the successful candidate.

Selection

Selection criteria for recipi- ents will be based on demonstra- tion of the highest ideals and qualities of citizenship and hu-

manitarian service while in pur- suit of excellence in their aca- demic amateur sport, fitness, health, community service and related endeavors.

A Selection Committee will recommend deserving candidates to the corporation’s Board of Di- rectors. The Board is solely re- sponsible for the final determina- tion of successful candidates.

Applications will be consid- ered either directly or through academic institutions. Recom- mendations for scholarship assis- tance made by institutions will be an important factor in the final selection process.

Payment

Payment of scholarship will be made directly to the university or college attended. Payments will be made in two installments — the first in the fall and the sec-

ond in January upon confirma-

tion of enrollment from the uni-—

versity or college registrar. Pay- ments by the institutions to the award holders will be according to the normal practice of the uni- versity or college concerned.

Right of Withdrawl

The Board of Directors re- serves the right to cancel any award before payment has been made where the candidate has failed to meet the conditions of the program. The tenure of the Scholarship is dependent upon the maintenance by the student of a standard of work and con- duct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the Scholarship.

Through his Marathon of Hope and the inspiring example of his courage and determination, Terry Fox has made a consider-

able contribution to the Cana- dian nation.

The Terry Fox Humanitar- ian Award Program has been initiated by the Government of Canada, on behalf of the Cana- dian people, to provide perma- nent and honoured recognition of this signal contribution by of- fering scholarship assistance to those who best exemplify the dis- tinguished qualities and ideals of Terry Fox.

Deadline for the submission of applications, complete with sup- porting documents is February Ist.
