YESTERDAY a child accidentally fell from the second-story window of a house on Dor- chester street. Its head struck against the platform, fracturing its jaw and inflicting in- juries from which it is not expected to re cover. .

Tre brig Zinga, with cargo of 27,000 bushels of oats, of 34 pounds each, and 417 pieces deals, containing 11,600 feet superficial measure, shipped by Peake bros. & Co., cleared for Plymouth, Engiand, on the 2nd inst.

A Luexy Coutier.—Mr. H. Wilkins, a laborer, residing at Lorway Mines, recently received the very pleasant intelligence that he had fallen heir toa very valuable estate in Essex County, England. The estate com- rises 800 acres of land, much of which is under cultivation. Mr. Wilkins intends to leave for Eugland at an early date.—Coape Breton Times.

Tur Patriot of Saturday night, in a short paragraph, denies that a copy of the Stamp Act was borrowed by the editor from a gentle- man of this city. Mr. Lawson, by this denial, further adds ingratitude to his want of cour- tesy fo the gentleman who kindly furnished the copy of the Act to him. He tries to play the role of ‘‘Joe Miller” and be witty, but his efforts at wit are like a dance at a wake.

Tury organized a cricket club in Sussex, N. B., a short time ago, and when they went to measure the ground they used a 200 yard tape line, which they left on the ground. Thenext day two fine yearlings belonging to the rector, Rev. Mr. Medley, came along and devoured it. It killed them, though, and when opened each of them, it was found, had gobbled ex- actly one hundred yards.

Suicrpk Manta iy New Brunswick.—At Tower Hill, St. Stephen, N. B., on Thursday last, Mrs. Logan cut her throat. She is not dead, but her state is precarious. Mrs. Robb, formerly of Baillie, cut her bowels open with a knife at Levar Settlement, near St. Stephen, N. B., a few days ago, and died from the effects of the wound. An old soldier named James Kiggins committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor at Portland, N. B., on Friday last.

Tue Intercelonial Railway has lost most of the flour traffic between Ontario and St. John, as steamers and sailing vessels are bringing Ontario flour to St. John eight to ten cents per barrel cheaper than the Grand Trunk and Jn- tercolonial will carry it. A telegram to the St. John Sun from Toronto says: ‘‘ The bark Chevalier nas been chartered to carry flour from Thorold at 40 cents a barrel to Prince Edward Island, Halifax and Cape Breton, and to return with a cargo of coal at $2 (freight) per ton.

Tur 8. S. “ Albert,’ from the Magdalen Islands, with mails and passengers, arrived at Pictou on Friday. She brought the following news: During the past week very cold and frosty weather has been experienced there, with strong north and northeast winds, doing much damage to the early vegetation. On the night of the 26th inst. there was a heavy fall of snow, which remained on the ground during the greater part of the day following. Codfish have struck on the inshore banks, off Amherst and All Right Islands, and a few mackerel have been taken in Pleasant Bay. The mack- erel fleet are arriving for the net fishery, and will be larger than that of last season, The lobster fishermen are all doing well.

Tue appearance of the interior of the Union Bank has been much improvéd of late by the erection of a most elegant counter in the banking room. The counter was constructed by Mr. Wm. Henderson. It runs the full length of the room. The front stands about six and a half feet high; is made of American ash, cherry, and polished ebony, and is fitted with embossed glass a quarter of an inch thick, with a Greek border around each pane. The deliveries are furnished with glass-fittings and doors 4 inch thiek, with the name of the clerk inscribed on each door. The workmanship displayed. oy the counter front reflects-:much credit on Mr. Henderson. It is very neat, and its finish, we dare say, cannot be surpassed in the Provinces.
