On May 5, 1970 the U.P.E.l. Student Union approved in princi- pal the idea of converting the old barn at the far end of the campus into the new Coffee Shop. After two months of detailed planning, financing and securing the proper personnel, the U.P.E.I. Student Union approved construction of the new Student Center.

The barn, probably the largest of its type on RE]. and in perfect condition, was donated by the University to the Student Union to be renovated into a student center.

The Student Union hired Peter A. MacNeil as their architect and plans were drawn up. The new building is to contain a 500 seat coffee shop, a student lougne and a recreation center. In addition, a trophy case displaying the achieve-

ments of the athletes of the former institutions of S.D.U. and P.W.C. will be located in the main foyer.

The building is to cost in the area of $130,000 of which $34,000 was donated to the U.P.E.I. S.U. by the former S.D.U. S.U. The remainder of the money has been borrowed and is to be repaid over the next few years.

The building, although on Uni~ versity property, is to be owned by the Student Union and the maintenance of the buildings is the sole responsibility of U.P.E.I. . . v . , Student Union. ' ' = ' 3‘"

The building has been referred to by some as probably one of the most unique coffee shops in this part of the coun try—and this may

with a comfortable and somewhat stylish setting and a building with plenty of atmosphere. We feel that the new center will indeed offer us just that.
