The “Femme Sole”

Tux Liberal Leader called upon h's party, on Friday, to vote down the propo- aition that unmarried women owning pro ‘perty and performing the public duties ap pertaining thereto should be empowered to vote in Provincial elections;—and hia party \obeyed the call. That is to say, they re- fused an additional security for the in- ‘terests of property-holders and an addi- ‘tional guarantee that we shall have our ‘future legislation and administration in re- ‘spect to Provincial affairs on the lines of ‘temperance and morality. Everyone knows that women are more temperare and have greater interests in temperance ,than men. Everyone knows that, taken al- ‘together, they are purer and better than men, and that their inatinets and motives are higher. The Christian world, indeed, ‘appreciates more and more the truth of | Wordsworth’s description :

Perfect woman, nobly planned, To warn, to comtort and command ;

A being breathing thoughtful breath,

And yet a spirit still and bright,

With something of angelic light.

It is a well-known fact that true Lib- erals throughout the Eaglish-speaking world are working tuwards the po'itical ea- franchisement of women in the hope that purer laws may be passed and enforced. But our Liberal Leader (save the mark) ridicules the idea and pours contempt upon the heads of the men who propose that single women owning proparty may vote at Proviacial elections. We marvel that Mr. B-ll was silent when the Premier was

frauchise the women of P. E Island who are free agenta and own property. We wonder at Mr. Warburton. Sherweed Cemetery.

At the annual meeting of the Sherwood Cemetery C.mpany the report of the direc- ors for the past year was adopted. It is as follows :—

Owing to an amendment in the Aet of Incorporation passed in the last session of the L-gislature, the report herewith sub- mitted for your approval embraces the operations of the Company from 3rd of February, 1891, uot 6 b April, 1892, in- clusive.

During that period the receipts from all sources have amounted to $417, including $14 received by the Secretary for repairs tv monuments, and tv be disbursed by him to Meesrs. Cairns & McLean. Apart from this sum the entire reeeipts are as follows ;

In order to provide the keeper with suitable accommodation for storage of his implements and machinery. An additivn of 12x16 fees has been made to the building heretoture used as a stable, thus enlurging ic to double i's turmer size, and a neat and substantial fenve six feet high and 100 feet in leogth has been constructed in the rear of this building This work which would have cost at least $25 for labor alone, if done under contract has been performed under the superintesdence of the secretary at the smai] outlay of $3 besides the cost of materials. A hedge of abont 500 young spruces was sent out by Mr. Noah Sone last spring, extending from the new fence to the gateway near the station, and the hedge along the railway line was replanted where it had been des royed by fire. Some forty ornamental trees were also planted by him at distances of twenty feet apart, commencin, at the entrance near Brackley Pvint Road and extending about midway through the cemetery Upwards of twenty tons of ashes, goes oo to the Company by Mr.

For the more efficient managenent of the company’s affairs it was found necessary to amend its Act of Incorporation last session by changing its corporate name to the Sher wood Cemetery Company, reducing its directors to five, vesting in ail piot holders the right to vote, simp'yifying the mode of enacting bye laws and faciiiating the mode of cullecting arrears on shares. This act was passed at no expense to the company excepting the f-e of ten dollars exacted by the Legis lature The late keeper having resigned, Mr. Ambrose Wa'kius was appointed in his stead ia November list. The directors have reason to belicve that the interests of the company have been served by the change thus made in the keepership Mr. Watkins appears to be an efficient and trustworthy man who takes an active interest in his work, and considerable improvem:nt is visible in the appearance of the cemetery siace he entered upon his duties.

During the past summer the secretary and one of the directors made apwards of thirty visits to the cemetery, spending s-verai

hours at eacn visit, for the purpose of directing and supervising the keeper in the discharge of his

duties and of seeing that all work under taken by bim fur plotholders was satisfactorily performed.

The Directors are pleased to state thit agreeably to their suggestion in last year’s report, a sumber of plotholders raised and graded their plots last summer, and have sown them down with lawn or grass seed, several very handsom: monum-ots have also been erected tendiog .» adorn and improve the cemetery.

In concluding thia report your Directors desire to thank those of the sharcholders who have so generously subscribed to the fnad raised last year for the practical interest they have thus manifested in the cemetery, and your Directors would express the hope that those who have not hitherto suvscribed may be induced to do so during the comiag year in order that the caretaking and imprevement of plots may be made general if possible.

Keenan, Eeq., and old and respected neighbur, the particulars which are as tollows. The deceased has lived alone for a number of years, and on Saturday evening last several eersons called upon him and found him basily employed at his trade. But not gaining admittance, he suspected something was wrong and hastened for the next neighbor, On returning they forced the door o and were horrified to find the prostrate form of the dece. sed lying the floor and life extinct. An inquest was held betore Thos. A. Dougan, J P., and a verdict returned that the deceased came to The deceased emigrated to this Island from Sootland when he was ten years of » and at the time of his death was in his 74th year. He was remarkable for his many goed qualities and amiable disposition. His fumeral. which was largely attended took place on Tuesday. A Requiem High Mase was, celebrated by the Rev. Peter Curran, after which all that was mortal of an old and re friend was laid to rest in the quiet eemetery of St. Bonaventure’s far away from the scenes of his childhood.
