The childcare crisis on Canadian campuses has been acute for many years. Student parents have been looking for national leadership in providing a daycare strategy that would recognize the needs of low- income persons, as well as addressing the need for adequate childcare facilities on campus.

In August 1988, the Hon. Jake Epp, former

Minister of Health and Welfare, announced a $4 billion childcare program providing 200,000 new daycare spaces over a seven year period. For students with children this initiative does little to alleviate their problems of overcrowded and underfunded campus childcare facilities. For many single parents, particularly those in graduate school, the lack of daycare on campus often means an interruption in their studies and an incomplete degree. _

Graduate Studies

The participation rates of women in graduate schools drop off in comparison to the undergraduate figures. In 1989-90 women in full-time undergraduate programs accounted for 51.4% of the undergraduate student population, in graduate studies, however, women account for only 41.5% of the total.
