Ahh yes, summertime is coming, and you know what that means, hot days, hot sand, hot first- years...and of course hot movies. Sorry to all the girls for the sexist humor, and to all the guys this is not an article about hot sand. Well, I have been busying myself with checking out all the upcoming summer movie trailers, and I have to say that it is looking positive for some summer blockbusters. I chose a few that I thought had the most potential, but that is not to say that I didn’t leave out a number of others that caught my attention as well.

I’ll start with a film from Touchstone Pictures called “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Iam not sure how many of you will be familiar with this title, but for those who are you will understand why the release of this movie is causing a lot of excitement. Douglas Adams is the creator of the story, and I must say that the time and work that went into creating this story is phenomenal. This story started its life as a BBC Radio series which aired for the first time in 1978. It then turned into a series of best-selling novels, then a television series, and lastly, a popular record album. So to people who have followed any of these, the idea that the story is being made into a Hollywood movie is quite exciting. In the story, the main character Arthur Dent awakens one day and soon hears from his friend Ford Prefect that the earth is going to be destroyed. Ford Prefect is an alien who has been stuck on earth for 15 years and is working ona book which is called “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

This book is supposed to contain commentary on every single thing in the galaxy, commentary that has.all been collected by Ford Prefect. So we see that Ford saves himself and Arthur from being destroyed along with the earth, and so starts their great adventure through the universe. The story contains awesome characters and ideas, many of which are clever and very comical. I could talk about the story line for days, but you should really try to read the book or get your hands on the radio series if you can...by totally legal means of course... cough cough. But honestly folks, the movie will be one to see and has something that everyone will enjoy. It comes out April 29", and I highly recommend seeing it, because if it is even half as good as the book or radio series then it won’t be a disappointment.

Next, I want to talk about a movie that is based on a true story. Anyone who knows anything about the history of sports or popular culture will know what I am talking about when I say Dogtown or the Z-Boys. The movie is from Tri-Star Pictures and is called “Lords of Dogtown” and takes place in the 70’s in “Dogtown,” located

in Venice, California. The story is based ona surf team that was sponsored by a local surf shop called “Zephyr’s”.

Zephyr’s surf team, who were known locally as the “Z-Boys,” took their

profound surfing skills and applied skateboarding scene which was relatively new at the time. The movie

follows the lives of the team members

and tells how a group of so called “punk” kids gave rise to the exploding scene of extreme sports and transformed popular culture in a way that would never be forgotten. But the fame that the team comes across overnight tests their friendships and pushes them to the edge. The movie is co-written by Stacy Peralta who was one of the Z-Boys during their time of fame. The cast includes Heath Ledger who plays a member of the Zephyr team, Skip Engblom. I think that this movie has a great deal of potential, and it will be refreshing to see a true story that is relevant to much of toady’s pop- culture. Also, if you haven’t already seen it, go and rent “Dogtown and Z- Boys,” which is a documentary of the Zephyr surf team that was released in
