Previous ‘to leaving New York, the officers of the Viceroy were pre- sented with a splendid flag, on which is emblazoned the arms of the city of New York on the one side, and the city of Galway on the other. The loss of this fine ship is attributed tothe com- a being out ofkelter. We have heard that the same cause nearly proved her destruction on the passage from Galway to ths port. The fact of the ship being so far off her course is conclusive evidence that to an error of the compasses alone is the cause of her going on shore, and that no blame can be attributed to any person. It elucidates another important fact, namely, that all the dangers of the voyage from Europe to America are to be encountered after going West of our magnificent fharbour; While the stranding ofthe Great Britain on the other side of the Atlantic erry tells the same tale as regards the West-coast.of } +land.—Vov.

Latest From Canapa.—A ae despatch tothe Boston Allas, dated Toronto June 25th, says: Last night the Legislative Assembly had under consi- deration a set of resolutions pro by Mr. Boulton, embracing in detail a complete scheme of Republican government. After a debate the House voted that the resolutions were republican and revolutionary.—43 to 13.

Tuz American Paisoners.—We learn from Ca Werd, ofthe barque Rapid, which left Havana on the 13th inst., and arrived at this port yesterday, that the trial of the prisoners taken at{Woman’s [sle wos stil! going on, on boarda Spanish 74, lying in port. A large aumber of gun boats were kept rowing around her, to prevent any unauthorised persons from communicating with her.

The U.S. Consul, Mr. Campbell, and Commander Randolph, asked permission to see the prisoners con- fiaed on board, but the authorities refused to allow them to hold any communication, stating that they would be tried by the laws of maritime nations, end if found guilty would be dealt with accordingly.

There have been several deaths among the prisoners confined on board of the 74 gunship. The captainsand crews of the barque Georgia and brig Susan Loud, were kept in confinement on board of the same vessel with those taken from Woman’s Island.

Several persons have been arrested, put in prison, and their property confiscated, on suspicion of being con- cerned in the invasion by Gen. Lopez.

The U. S. sloops of war Albany and Germantown were lying off and on in the harbour, waiting orders, It was the opinion of the American Consul that should the U. 8. Government demand the release of the prisoners ta- ken from Woman’s Island, they would be given up without further trouble.

The sickness among the shipping at Havana has en- tirely subsided, but there were a few cases of cholera among the blacks.

Since the date of your letter, Lord Kinnaird on the part of the Society had an interview with Lord Grey, in consequence of your former communication, the re- sult of which I forwarded to you.

In consequence of your present communication | have moved in the House of Commons for the produc- tion of the Correspondence and Despatches on the sub- ject, but [ was met bya refusal on the part of the Government, on the ground that the correspondence is yet incomplete, and that it involves questions of private interests, {[ then presented your Petition, and read it, inextengo, before the House of Commons, and have given notice that in a fortnight I shall move for further information. ‘This Society must be guided by the way in which this motion may be met, as to what further stepe they should take. .
