Johnny might not be as smart as a .Fox in most ways. but he certainly had been too smttrt to he caught. Johnny had even dared to dig a new home at the edge or the Old Pasture. As you know that is where Ready and Mm. Reddy have lived for some time. They have lived there long enough to think of the Old Pasture as belonging to them, which of course it doesn't. When Reddy found the back door. he grinned. There was no yellow sand there. There was nothing to catch the eyes of any one passing. In fact, that back door was partly hidden by overhanging grass. Red- dy wouldn't have iound it. had he

"Smart," said Roddy to Mrs. Red- dy. ”Now that we know where both the front door and the back door are we should be able to plan suc- cessiully a way to catch him. I'm glad we have found this back door. All we have to do is to wait, and not let him know that he is being watched. Sooner or later he will go far enough away in search of sweet clover so that one us can get to the iront door and one to the back door before he can let either, then we'll have him."

”Maybe," said Mrs. Reddy, "he'll never go far enough away for us to get to those doors before can get to one of them."

"He will. Don't you worry ah; out that. If we keep away from him, he'll forget we're living so near; helll get careless. He'll go farther and farther out on the Green Meadows looking for sweet clover," declared Raddy.

Raddy was right. Having nutsh- ed his house for the time heing. Johnny began to think more a- hout eating than about work. some folks are like that. He had plenty of sweet. clover so ticar at hand that there was little dan- lzer in getting it. but after a while he began to wonder if there was not clover that was sweeter and bet- ter. When North bid four clubs over three hearts, he was actually giving a slam try, and he was lucky that South did not accept it!

West chose the safe lead of the spade ten. Dcclarer won, cashed his top clubs and his other spade honor, then exiled with a club. East, discarded the deuce of dia- inondii mi this trick, warniiilz against a switch to that stilt, so West, wisely led another spade, giv- ing declarer a ruff alid discard (which did lilni no goodl.

South ruffed the spade return in dummy, discarding a diamond. then cashed the are and king oi hearts and his own last club. lit was on this club lead that West made his fatal error! Seeing no reason to keep the spade. he dis- carded lt--and lie was then thrown in with the heart queen and forced in return a diamond. Declarer ducked the diamond return on the board and was able to win with his min riuccii, lllililliiig the Mn- tract.

It goes without. saying that West should have held tightly to his fourth spade as an exit, card - he could well afford to give up the low diamond!
