** Ves,” continued the ’tzin, “here are the chosen of the realm—the noblest and the best —each with his life in his hand, an offering to you. What need of further words? You have not forgotten the. habits of war; you divine the object of the conceurse of priests ; you understand they are formed in ranks, tuat, upon a signal, they may throw them- selves as one man upon the strangers. ‘ My son,” the king answered, after a pause, ‘if I were a prisoner I wouldj say you and the lords have done well ; but, being free and pursuing my own policy, L reject the rescue. In a few days the strangers will depart; then, if not sooner, I will come back as you wish, and bring the old time with me, and make all the land happy.” : ;

A Diphtheria Scare. There is no doabt but that diphtheria in its

and small towns. is no reason for frightening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Even ulcerated sore throat is bad enough, aud no person would have that for fun. Yet hun- dreds of p wSons are said to have had diph theria who only had a severe sore threat. The form of sore throat which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people call quinsy. ‘“Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria, was probably a form of diphtheria, and very dangerous. An old; hospital nurse in Boston says: “‘Itain'tthe clear cold of winter that, lays people up with colds, catarrh,*and sore throats, and lays the child- ren low with diphtheria; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet slushy days.” This is very true, and explains why those troubles

We know from experience that it will cure a common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catarrh, bronchitis, croup, etc,, a8 promptly as the good old Johnson's Liniment.
