DISASTER REPORTED.

Loxpox, April 1k.—aA third very seri- ous defeat has been icficted upon the British forces inthe Orange Free State, according to despatches from Boer sources.

As reported, the facts of the victory and that on Saturday General DeWit’s Burgh ers attacked the British forces,1509 strong» at Meerkatefontein.

After a fierce engagement in which, according toone account 600 British were killed and wounded. The Boers captur. ed the entire command.

The War Office has not made public any despatches indicating the possibility of such an engegement, nor do any of the press telegrams received from correspon~ dents with the British army—many of which bear a later date than Saturday— contain any hint of this disaster.

But the censorship is Very stringent at present acd migbt easily prevent such news from reaching Englend uatil after luord Roberts had seen fit to report on it.

Another Pretoria despatch locates the battle field south of Brandfort and north Bloemfontein inwhich case it might be part of General Tucke1’s Division which has been lying at Karee siding since the battle arouad kopjes there.

The dexpatcbes agree in stating that the British lost in killed, wounded and prisoners fifteen hundred men. That Roberts’ realizes seriousness of the pre- cent condition of things in the Free State is shown by the fact that General Rundle with his Bighth Division bas been urder- ed to Springfonteio.

This puts 10,000 more men on duty to guard the railway and keep the Boers away from the British line of communi-~ cation.

The Boers have agsin crossed the Orange river, which will tend to stir up a new rebellion among the Dutck in the north of Cape Colony. They are in great force near Aliwal North. At Odeva: etroon, east of Bethulie aod south of

Hauirax, April 11.—The funeral of Private MeDonald of the Special Service Canadian Battalion in gerrison here, took place yesterdey with full mil'tary hovors. The casket with the remains was draped with British flags, and deceased’s helin:t and side arms surmounted it.
