Tue effect of the lightning of Thursday last waa felt in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Buildings were shattered in many localities. Mrs. Baker, of Pleasant River, about fifteen miles from lridgewater, N. S., was struck by lightuing and instaatly killed, while her hus- band and two of his family were paralyzed. At Hantsport, N. B., Mr. Stephesn Jinks was struck and instantly killed by lightning.

THE announcement of the sudden death of Mrs. Mortis, the wife of Thomas Morris, Ksq., which took place ou Saturday evening, cast a gloom over the community. The deceased was driving or Tuesday last, and on that day fell sudden!y ill, and soon became unconscions, She lingered until Saturday evening at 5 o'elock, wheu she expired. Mrs. Merris was the’eldest daughter ‘of John McGowan, Esq. She was a great favorite inthe city, and her untimely leath is much deplored. Her funeral, which took place this afternoon, was very largely attended.

Each man’s face tells the tale of eagerness and determination to carry of the laurels ef the day. The work was commenced by the artist when he had to Igber under great disadyantages but we have no hesitation in saying that he has turn- ed out a drawing that not only does him eredit but shows that he possesses more than ordinary ability as an artist. Such a work should, and we feel sure will be, appreciated by all admirers of fine art. The artist, Mr. Fersey-Breou, is endeavoring to dispose of this tine work and wehope that he will meet with such auecess as will compensate him for his labor, The picture is now en exhibition at Rubin & Hart’s cigar store, cor, Queen and Richmond streets.

The Times says: ‘*We do not believe that Ayoob Khan’s power in the field will prove in the long run more formidable than that of any of the other Afghan Sirdars who col- lected so-called armies and gained tem- perary by surprise or over whelming numbers against small bodies of British troops.’

It is stated that arrangements have been made for the despatch of four or five thou sand troops te Afghanistan from England within a few days. The military anthori- ties are prepared to supply from England, within the next fortnight, 12,000 troops of allarms. The Admiralty has signified t» the War Department its readiness to provide transportation for 20,060 within three weeks. Gen. Sir Garnet Wolseley come to London yesterday from the Isle of Wight after hearing the news of the dis- aster at Candahar. <A _ teleyram from the Viceroy of India, last night, refers te dis- patch of reinforcements froin various parts in India. Candahar is provisioned till the end of Oetober.

A despatch from Calcutta says that Gen. Sandimann reports that having become an xious about the state of affairs at Candahar and that not having heard from General

It is re- ported that assistance will be sent at once from Chameen Cheki. This undoubtedly refers to forces under Gen. Phayre, whom Earl Granville stated yesterday in the House of Lords, had been recently station- ed at that place, A later despatch, however, contradicts this and states that Gen. Phayre has telegraphed that he is unable te move, aud that he will not assume the res- ponsibility of attempting to relieve Canda- har until he can have a force at his com- mand strong enough to preclude the pos- sibility of anether reverse. A despatch from Simla reports a certain amount of dis- turbance between Chaman and Candahar on the direct line of advance of any reheving ferce from the former place. Despatches from Cabul report all tranquil there to-day, and that twenty theusand British troeps are in the capital. It is known, however, that these are mostly native levies, whose allegiance cannot be depended upen when there is any temptation to break forth. Hence the situation in Cabul is one of quiet with apprehension of revolt.
