It is im- possible to believe that any other than a set of madmen or good-natured fools would adopt the policy which this lan- guage indicates ; and yet this is the very policy which the Ohbstructives complain of our not pursuing! They say it is po- sitively wrong to take office—and brand us with every nickname their ingenuity gan suggest, Snatchers, Demogogues and Corruptionists, if we are supposed to entertain the idea of displacing them. But it is quite proper, and praiseworthy, and to the public advantage, for them- selves to retain and snatch at every office in the gift of the Crown.

Our object has been, and will be, to give encouragement to the talent of the country, and to stimulate honourable am- bition, oy throwing open to the free com- petition of all, the avenues that lead to honduraand emoluments. Their object has been, and would be to the end of time, if undisturbed in their career—to repress every ennobling sentiment which elevates the breast of the poor man as well as that of the rich, by arrogating to themselves superior intelligence and res- pectability, and by exacting homage and obedience from all who dared to come between the wind and their nobility, and were not privileged to enter the charmed eircle where they reigned supreme,

Having gone beyond the limits of th® space assigned to myself, I must leave for the subject of another Letter, a con- sideration of the third and fourth objec- tione stated above.

TVhe Rose arrived early on Thursday last from Picton, bringing the British and Colonia! Mails. We give below a synopsia of the Huglish and Irish news.

English papers, London and Liver- pool, are chiefly occupied with the details

Puneiual!y et [2 o'clock the Queen arrived, ber en/ree being marked by long and animated cheering. She seated her- self on achair raised on aplatform, sur- mounted by a spacious elegant blue canopy, adorned with feathers, with Prince Alberton her jeft, They were accom- panied by the Prince of Wales ard the Princess Royal. The court circle was now completely formed, makingea tableau never to be forgoiten. The Queen looked remarkably well. She wore theorder of the garter, a pink brocade dress,shot with gold, and the Prince looked caluly and proudly happy. The Dnke of Wellington who thia day completed his eighty-second year, had been there nearly two hours before, and the commissioners and allthe officials and ladies of the household — sur- rounding the throne presented a scene of extraordinary splendour. ‘The National Anthem was performed. The Arch- bishop of Canterbury then delivered the prayer of inauguration, which was follow- ed by the Hallelujah Chorus of Hlandel, ender the direction of Sir Henry R. Bish- op. <A procession was ties formed of » gsuost interesting character. Then came all the officials engaged in constructing the building ; afterwards the foreign act- ing commissioners. Then followed the

Royal Commissioners, among whom I nouced Mr. Cobden, dressed ina plain black coat. ‘Then followed the venerable Duke of Wellington, walking side by side with the Marquis of Anglesea; both were loudly cheered. The foreign am- bassadors, among whom Mr. Lawrence appear’l to considerable advantage from his age& commanding appearance,follow- ed, and her Bfajesty’s Ministers, headed by Lord John Russell. ‘These were loudly applauded; and lastly the Queen and Prince Albert, the one leading the Prince of Wales, and the other the Prin- cess Royal, closing the procession, with the royal Prussian guests at the palace, and the ladies of the household. ‘The procession first marched along the British or western nave, and then, recrossing the transepl, passed on to the eastern extre- mity, the United States’ end. At every step new acclamations arose; the music from the various organs saluted the pro- cession a8 it passed.

The Queen then declared “the Exhi- bition opened ;” and the trumpets and ar- tillery announced the fact tothe count- less multidudes outside.

The Princeand Princess of Prussia, Prince Frederic William and suite, arri- ved in London from Ostend.

‘The producis of the North American Colonies, are thus handsomely noticed by the special reporter for Wilmer and Smith;

“We now come to the colonia! depart- ment, comprising the industrial products of our Australian possessions, of the Ca- nadag, and Nova Scotia, New Zealand, several of the West India islands, the Cape of Good Hope, Western Africa, Malta, and the Channel Islands. The contributions from this vast extent of ter- ritory are chiefly confined to the south side of the nave. ‘They yield in interest and variety to no other department of the Exhibition, but they are chiefly raw pro- duce.”

The Russell Ministry had been again defeated on an amendment moved by Mr. Hume. limiting the duration of the pro- perty tax in its present state to one year. For the amendment—244; against n—

Srare or THE Countrr.—There is not yet the slightest indication of a de- cline in the emigration which has been in progress upon so furmidable a scale since the opening of the spring. Numbers of vessels are clearing out week by week fully freig!ited with passengers, from the various Irish ports; but they are replaced by others, which find no lack of appli- cants for a passage across the Atlantic, whilst vast numbers proceed by steam to Liverpoo}, to avail themselves of the fa- cilities of emigrating from that port. Nevertheless, the farms vacated by those who goaway are,in general, at once taken by other tenants, and in many cases a consolidation of small holdings occurs. For this reason,notwithstanding the immense extent of emigration, there are now much fewer complaints about tracts of Jand out*of cultivation than were made a year or two ago.

The Limerick Chronicle says ‘ There is more ground sowed with potatoes,in the south and west of Ireland, than has been known since the ineurable failure of 1846. Should the present crop attain healthy growth, there will be an awful loss to foreign breadstuff importers.’

An insidious attempt was made by the Obstructives to prevent the [llumination, by putting out placards in the afternoon, stating that the intention to illuminate was abandoned, after mature consideration, on the miser- ably false pretence, that it would invest her Ladyship with a political character, However, those who were disposed to shew this mark of respect to Lady Ban- nerman, were not entrapped by the cun- ning device of the enemy, who, by nine o’clock, must have been mortified to wit- ness the eomplete failure of their scheme.
