The following article was received by the Cadre fran Merritt Crockett, the head of the UPEI library, explaining the new Book Checkout Procedure and is being printed here for the \benefit of all library us- ers:
The library of the University of Prince Ed- ward Island has been for- tunate in receiving a bu- dget that has allowed it r to substanially increase the library collection 1si- noe the formation of the University of Prince Ed- ward Island. In. the past two years, however, seve- ral thousand dollars wo— _ rth of materials have j been taken from the libr- ary. In addition to this heavy financial loss, the Library faces the probl— ems of not being able to repurchase much of this; material beCause it is out of print and library us— ers are being‘denied acc- ess to materials that sh- ould be available to them. Early in 1972 the Univer- sity Cdtmmfity was advi- sed through the Cadre of this problem and of the alternatives available to the library should mater- ials continue to leave the library without going through proper circulation procedures. ’
Cu p Coups
From December 26 to Jan. 1 the 35th National Conference of Canadian Uni- versity Press. (CUP). was held in Winnipeg. The host University was the University of Manitoba and the' delagates stayed - at the Ramada Inn where the-majority of seminars, workshops, and discussions were held. .
Students from every University paper across Canada, with few, exceptions were present. It was an excellent opportunity to ‘meet, exchange ideas and learn more about Canadian University papers.
The Cadre was repre- sented by Carol Patterson, Editor, and Kathy Roach, Staffmenber. Problems relating to the Cadre were discussed. Two major problems - getting staff and Finance were talked about. "

the Senate Library Carmi- ttee unaninimously reco- mmended to Senate the fo— llowing motion:"That a co- ntrol desk be established in the Library, that per- sonnel be hired to check materials, briefcases,etc. leaving the library and that this be considered a.

spected before leaving
the library. This motion was passed without dissent at the Senate Meeting of Decenber 11, 1972.
All library users , including the library sta- ff will be required to -. present materials, brief- cases, etc. to the pers— ons in charge of the con— trol desk for inspection befor leaving the library. Although this service will be conducted as speedily as possible, library users should allow sufficient time for these checkout procedures so that they will be on time for class- es and other activities. It is our hope that the inconvenience of such pr- ocedures will be offset by the objectives the Library will achieve which will be to give all members of, the

The head office is in Ottawa where officals organize its services. Canada is divided into three regions: Atlantic Regional — ARCUP; Ontario Regional — ORCUP; Westeeregional - WRCUP. This year the ARCUP conference was held in St. John‘s NFID. and three
representatives from U.P . E . I .

Obituary
The University community was shocked to learn of the death of Dr. Roy DeVerl Willey who was killed when struck by a snowplow, in the K-mart
' parking lot. A visiting professor in education, Dr.
Willey came to UPEI in the summer of 1972.
"He brought with ’him an unrivaled wealth of academic and professional experience," commented Dr. Edward Edmonds, Dean of the Faculty of Edu- cation. “With his shrewd mixture of scholarship and practical experience he had made himself a most acceptable and popular colleague both with the staff and with the students in the Faculty of Education. His modesty, his erudition, his quiet charm of manner made him very dear to all who came in contact with him, and he will be much
missed,” said Dean Edmonds.
Dr. Willey held degrees from the University of Wyoming (B.A., English, Spanish and Music); Brig- ham Young University (M.A. in School Admin- istration) and Stanford University (Ph.D. in Edu- cational Psychology).
He is survived by his wife, the'former Helen Young (great-granddaughter of Brigham Young), and six children. Burial took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. '
