On rising, Mr. Kirby referred to the fact that the lecture could hardly be called a 5th of November lecture, as he had only had a brief notice from the committee and bad no time to prepare a special lecture enitable to the occasion. However, he hoped, as he held the mirror, if any ‘tw their own character, they would _politeiy bow and say “glad to see you.” He war responsible only for holding the mirror and not for the character portrayed.

The lecturer dealt first with the distinc tion between character and reputation showirg one to be the real person and the other ouly what somebody may say of the person. ‘True manly character was the want of the times—true mea in every profession ard path of rife. Some charac- ters. however, stood out more prominently than others, and we will look at some of these. Then the grumbler was illustrated by poetry and by 4 very uniq te sermon on “Jerhuran waxed fat and kicked,” aad was very amusing and delighted - the au- dience. The hypocrite, the parsimonious man, the humorous man, and the best character of all, the good man, were all dealt with and illustrated by apt anecdote and story. The peroration dealt with the great fire in London, England, when, amid ihe smoke and blaze of the awful cstas- trophe, the one object which attr acted ali eyes was the bright, shicing golden cros= on the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The one thing which will stand out when everything elee will pass away ts the cha’ - acter of the good, who have been in fluenced by the story of the Cross.
