“UPEID’S MILLENNIUM FUNDRAISING

PROJECT: A NEW STUDENT CENTRE”

Fundraising will soon be underway to support the UPEI Student Union’s goal to open the doors of a new Centre for students on campus in the spring of 2001.

The estimated cost of the new building is $3 million. The UPEI Student Union has been busily working toward this goal for a number of years and through student fees has raised the majority of the $1 million already in place. Raising the remaining $2 million will be the major focus of UPEI’s fundraising activities over the next year.

The new Centre will be built-next to the Atlantic Veterinary College (where the tennis courts are now). It is estimated that the new building will deliver double the space currently occupied by the Student Union in the UPEI Barn. The building will

feature a multi-purpose room for concerts and other student activities, the Panther Lounge, Student Union administration offices, meeting rooms, food seryice and more.

Alumni will have a multitude of memories regarding the current Student Union facility, a.k.a. “The Barn”. The Student Union moved into The Barn in 1970 (at that time it was considered a temporary location). Twenty-five years later, in 1995, the Student Centre Project 2000 Committee was formed by the Student Union to start the ball rolling on a new student Centre. Since then, a site has been chosen and a

business plan developed. Concept sketches will soon be unveiled; construction is proposed to start in July, 2000; and the new Centre will open the following spring.

This Centre will not only benefit students, but will provide a gathering place for faculty, staff and visitors to campus. In many ways it will become the community Centre of UPEI and will also help the University compete with other Atlantic Canadian universities attracting new students,

Watch for more information as this special, and much anticipated, project unfolds over the next few months. Plans currently include a_ public fundraising launch in the fall of 1999 with a targeted fundraising drive to UPEI alumni, faculty and staff and a combined 30" Anniversary Student Centre fundraising Gala in November.

MESSAGE FROM UPEI STUDENT UNION PRESIDENT

Last year around this time | spoke to students about improving communications between students and the Student Union. We have had a great deal of success with this project. Our newspaper is better than ever, we have approved the location of the radio station, CIMN, in the new Student Centre and business at the Panther Lounge is up over last year. Most recently advertising campaigns for the March elections has paid off with voter turn out up over 20%. You can be sure that things will continue to get better with our new Council. Our cooperation has sealed our success.

1998 YEARBOOKS

The 1998 Yearbooks are in and available for pick-up or purchase. The books are free of charge for 1998 graduates and cost $10 for anyone else who is interested. The 1998 Yearbooks can be picked up at the UPE! Student Union or the Yearbook office (Main 09).
